I learned Taiwanese Mandarin because I use Chinese (Traditional) Characters繁體字. In China, people use Chinese (Simplified) Characters 簡體字. Both of Mandarin, the meanings are same but there are different characters.

Most of time, we see Taiwanese Mandarin in the video of OST (Original/Official Sound Track) from movies. Because the movies and the songs were translated to different versions from Taiwan or China.

For my translations, I only selected "Chinese" but I used Chinese (Traditional) Characters. I don't think I have to select Taiwanese Mandarin. For me, Chinese is Chinese, there are not big different. :)

I knew about the Cantonese one. And yes that was what I had meant. Google Translate says that anything I put in Taiwanese Mandarin reads as Chinese Simplified.

I also know that both Mandarin languages sound or are pronounced a bit differently too.

Taiwanese Mandarin uses traditional Chinese characters as compared to Mainland China's Mandarin with simplified Chinese characters. However, both sound the same. (Cantonese dialect is out of the picture). I don't think there's a separate category for Taiwanese Mandarin lol

Chinese (Cantonese), Chinese (Hakka) and Taiwanese Hokkien, they are all spoken languages and written in traditional Chinese or simplified Chinese characters. These languages have to be separated by different category because they sound different.

These languages are based on their dialects to borrow the words from Chinese. Sometimes they makes non-sense if you only read the words or the sentences in Chinese. You better know these languages and then you will understand What the meanings of sentences are.

For Chinese Mandarin, it depends on the learners to use Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional). For my opinion, if the video is mentioned Taiwanese Mandarin, you just select Chinese category. :)

For your question, "which is Mandarin Chinese by default compared to Chinese (Cantonese). " I think they are depended the learners and the users.

I just "read" some lyrics of Chinese (Cantonese) and most of them used Chinese (Traditional) character. They look like the same for me and I can understand their meanings. But when I "listen" the song, they are totally different story. And I have to guess what they are singing.

There is a little bit confused. However, it's same as others' languages, if you master the language and you will know what the difference is. :)
