[CLOSED] [SOLVED] Installing of new deactivation options

Regarding the current situation, I would like to suggest a stop list for the own poems as already provided for translations.

In times of increasing social tension, such a deactivation option for comments should not be limited to YouTube or other websites.

The background is a new troll which, apart from negative comments, does not provide any other contributions.

Thank you in advance!

I agree with this, in the sense that if people come to LT only to make harass and make disparaging comments about existing members, this should not be tolerated at all. Rather than a de-activating comments, though, wouldn't it be better to flag comments as inappropriate and have them removed from any poems / songs and their translations? In that way, anyone who wants to participate in an interesting and fulfilling discussion can do so, while those who engage in inappropriate behaviour would simply be erased and prevented from participating in the same thread again.

Can someone please look into this?

Thanks! Regular smile

Thank you for your support, Francesc!

Luckily, these comments have stopped for the moment.

Nevertheless, I would welcome a deactivation function for the own works, as it is also existing on YouTube and poetry-sites in addition to the possibility of reporting. Times are becoming harder... [@lt]

Of course you would like to have "a deactivation function for the own works",
so nobody can critizise your anti-vaccination activism you foster in a series of your "poems".

I would not support such a feature. Free speech should be supported including the commenting there upon. Of course there are reasonable limits to free speech, for example, incitement to violence, outright hatred, etc, but "questionable" opinions and subsequent comments should almost always be allowed.

The mentioned poems are against dictatorship, against fascism, against dogmatism, against violence and against hate:

They warn the reader against people like you dividing people and lying without any evidence even though they know better:

They warn against obsessive-compulsive neurotics who believe they can solve any problem through primitive totemism:

They warn against letting explode long suppressed anger on self-generated minorities: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/vera-jahnke-der-schnellkochtopf-lyrics.html

However, I not only want to warn my readers, I also want to protect myself. This sort of protection is my priority at the moment:

In some comments you have invented never existing "friends" and connections (https://lyricstranslate.com/de/vera-jahnke-im-namen-des-volkes-lyrics.html). What would you feel, if I did the same with you? Are you still able to feel anything else than fear and hate?

Even though you personally suggested removing health insurance for unvaccinated people (https://lyricstranslate.com/de/vera-jahnke-angst-lyrics.html?page=0), which is nothing else than a death penalty, I never ever said similar things about you, for example that you are supporter of such horrible calls for murder:

Yes, I don't want to read your disgusting and dangerous attacks any longer! You are behaving like a wild animal out of control. And you're not attacking my position, you're attacking me personally! So, you've crossed the red line and should better be excluded from here.

It is high time now to stop your hate and to try to become a social human being again. Regarding your opinion, you can of course believe whatever you want, as that is part of your human dignity.

Thank you for writing your comment, so everyone can see what I am talking about here.

I'd like to say that is not acceptable language even if you have disagreements with Hansi and not a way to get what you want. It's not up to you to decide who should stay or should not in the website, and if you insist on that I'll have to talk a little bit harsher to you, something I do not want or like to. You see, that is why I told you to STOP provoking him. It's clear to me (specially because you only listed them) you want to drive criticism away from only your own poems, not from the website as a whole, no, it's not like that. It's a personal thing, not your own opinion. People are free to say what they want unless it breaks the rules and disagree with content.

This thread was brought up for Mods as soon as you opened it, just for consideration. So far, no one agreed.

So many things have been suggested in the past... Prohibiting off-topic comments forever, unpublishing them, moving them to forum... We all ultimately decided they could all stay unless they broke the rules. Why? Because every now and then someone pops to accuse us of being dictators when simply doing our jobs (when that includes comments being disabled due to threats, offensive language, riot, etc.).

You want to know what Admins said? That they were thinking of making of LT a translation website and NOT a social network. The results of that change would be drastic for everyone.

Anyway, what has been reported by user doesn't actually break the rules of the website, as stated by LT here and which I quote

Zitat:

Comments are always welcome, however, please try to avoid off-topic comments in translations/song/artist pages. In case you want to discuss something that is not related to the content of a song/translation, you can use the chatrooms or the sub-forums. Do not bring politics or other irrelevant stuff to the website, unless it's contextualized. Off-the-rails comment sections will be closed, and frequent violators banned.

There's no reason why comments reported by user should be unpublished. They're all related to the content in question and they're on their right to say what they want. User's content has been reported by other members, so it's not an issue of *Oh, look, this specific someone has an issue with me*. Why have we not acted? Because it also does not break any rule. Both parties involved are actually following the rules.

Vera and Hansi, I simply do not understand how you got to this point, but your comments side by side revealed the actual issue. You both use hyperbolic expressions and very personal adjectives when you disagree. Vera’s anti-forced vaccination position included super hyperbolic language (ejaculation) - btw, I’m pro vaccinations - and Hansi pushed back with the super cruel idea of taking away medical assistance (cannot say I didn’t utter similar concept when my ardently unvaccinated relative-in-law spent 6 weeks in the hospital with Covid and then a group e-mail was sent “thank God he is home”) — so, both of you have to make it about facts, about your stance, but without the personal attacks like coward, animal, etc. You are both good and intelligent people, you can cut each other some slack due to harsh circumstances, you can also do the impossible - argue for the opposite point of view to your own so you better understand what each one tries to say. Let’s say Hansi rethinks coward and Vera’s mother. Vera could try to consider the impact and strain the unvaccinated cause hospital staff unbearable strain. It’s a start, no?

I think this is the main problem we've been having this last year/two years. Too many people come here treating LT like a social network where they focus more on finding friends and talking about their personal lives rather than translating.
I remember back in 2012 the atmosphere was completely different. People who wanted to talk all went to the public chatroom, while the rest would simply translate, everyone's hobby here. I'm quite sad at how things evolved...

Same here. It's difficult to keep discussions where they belong without the chatroom. Of course people can use PMs to talk about whatever as well, but until they feel comfortable with someone to the point of opening up to them it's a long long road - and I've been there, I know how it is. My opinion? We should try and keep at least a few options to socialize as we someway may end up finding people with the same interests as us (which is nice - but here I speak for myself, when I joined I was myself a quirky teenager), but we should not forget about the main objective of the website and the community.

Personally, I find the integration between translation and a more personal level of interaction quite fulfilling and entertaining, as long as everyone's main focus remains on translation. I utterly hate the Chat room, which is chaotic and makes it very difficult to follow what people want to share. Nobody is saying that LT should turn into a support group of sorts, but it is always lovely to see that there is something beyond the mechanical aspects of translation. If some people do not like to engage others or share opinions / more emotional aspects of themselves, it is very easy for them to do so - simply refrain from interacting directly with others.

Furthermore, I would like to mention that as long as no one is promoting violent content or targeting any particular group or community, everyone has a right to share their opinions. I am personally vaccinated, but I understand those who are relunctant to do so for various reasons, and it would never occur to me to criticize them for it. After all, when some of us post our poems here, we do so out of a desire to share our work with the LT community, and there is no malicious intent whatsoever. Having the maturity to accept that others will not have the same opinions, aspirations and experiences as you do, is essential in order to allow this space to remain free and pleasant.

I never thought it was a good idea to tolerate users to act as self created "artists" on this website.
Now we see that this can even be abused for ideological propaganda.

That's why I have proposed an enhancement to the rules of LT in the Editors Room:

It is incompatible with the laws of LT for a user to double function as an artist in order to promote a debatable political or religious agenda or to disavow other users

(The refence to "religious" is to rule out future attempts by religious fundamentalists)

I have a simple question. What is the logic behind the stop list feature on translations but not on original works? I can't think of any other than the lack of development resources to make a simple change in the code.

The fact that you are not religious does not give you any right to call all religious people "fundamentalists". We also can't trust your or anybody's judgment on which religious people are fundamentalists and which are not or that "fundamentalism" is always bad. Other (already existing) restrictions (no calls to violence, racism, etc) should do.

If you can't critizise everybody could publish any type of rubbish or provocative stuff in their poems without being stopped.
That's not what I'd want to see and I'm confident the majority of our users see it that way.
LT should remain being an open website that grants the freedom of speech.
Criticism must be allowed.

No, it ate at me and my comments against it didn’t gather much support. Almost none.
But, I was able to leave comments.
And I had to, for my own sake, heed advice from someone to stop my fruitless struggle. So I am for leaving comments as is and the right to protest factually without offending the author.

You probably know nothing about religion which was a part (and many times the basis) of culture for thousands of years.
So, you vote for "freedom of speech" in criticism, but would not allow somebody you call "a fundamentalist preacher" to have the same freedom.

Oh, really? So you think you represent more people than I do. Based on what? Because you are an "editor"? You
opine on the appropriateness of members of LT having their own "creator's" pages without having created a single song/poem of your own?
You opine where religion belongs without having a clue on what religions are about. Has LT been announced as an anti-religion site?
Again, we have people from different cultures, some of them deeply religious. I myself am not religious because I grew up in a freaking communist country. I am not happy about it. And who are you to decide who belongs where?

Please let me make it clear: The reason for this forum was a new user who does not provide any real translation, but only writes ugly comments, which is even worse because they also affect my friends here. If not for me, as I seem to have lost any right for protection, stop him with respect to my friends.

Thread will be closed now as new information was provided to staff members via PM and because a few comments here go waaaay out of line and what should be considered a respectful discussion and disagreement.

I'd also like to remember the forums are not to be used to flame wars, witch hunts, name giving, etc etc etc. LT is not an arena for you to fight and punch the other party with whichever resources you have until there's a winner standing gloriously in the middle with a golden trophy in their hands or both parties fall exhausted on the floor. Always be diplomatic and reasonable. If you're not, and start acting like a troll, then it's better not to take part in discussions. If you notice someone won't change opinions, give up on them and move on, we can't do anything.

Moreover, every issue with any user should be taken to a Mod's knowledge via PM. I may not answer them quickly but you can all write to me whenever you want. I'm trying to be in LT at least once a day (in the past, when I was unemployed, I was here 24/7), so I'm likely around at all times, just consider jet lag and timezones.

Thanks to all who kept the discussion respectful,
I apologize if my words sounded too rude, harsh or aggressive.
