it's an idiom "to learn letters" -> "To get educated". It's the same in English as well? In this case letters are not referring to the alphabet.

AS I see, they are little children and, in my opinion, they go to school to learn the alphabet (the letters).

No no it's something general. Letters are referring in the ability to read, write and have knowledge about a lot of stuff - to be educated.

The story behind it , it's that in order to learn new things you have to be able to to read first (alphabet) - that's why you go to school.
