Les sables émouvants (перевод на Английский)

перевод на Английский

Pulse quickening sands

Lying on warm sand
I was counting the grains1 of your skin
while you swam in murky waters2,
between a shovel and a rake3.
Be it from desire or sunlight,
I felt like I was melting and burning.
We felt so alive back then,
feeling our blood boil and pulse.

You know, the pulse quickening sands4,
the more you grow up, the more you sink into them.
Even if time flows
this month of August never ends.
This month of August, ..., never ends
Even if the tide is turning5
this month of August never ends.
This month of August, ..., never ends

I recall the waves and the sea too
dancing in the foam in our glasses,
making us drunk with salty winds.
We huddle together6 all night long.
Listen to our laughter rippling
in the summer sky like waves on clear water7.
We didn't realize we were writing
the most beautiful pages of our story.

You know, the pulse quickening sands,
the more you grow up, the more you sink into them.
Even if time flows
this month of August never ends.
This month of August, ..., never ends
Even if the tide is turning
this month of August never ends.
This month of August, ..., never ends

Lying on warm sand
I was counting the grains of your skin
while you swam in murky waters,
between a shovel and a rake.
Be it from desire or sunlight,
I felt like I was melting and burning.
Even the dazzled sun
leaned to kiss you.

You know, the pulse quickening sands,
the more you grow up, the more you sink into them.
Even if time flows
this month of August never ends.
This month of August, ..., never ends
Even if the tide is turning
this month of August never ends.
This month of August, ..., never ends
Even if time flows
this month of August never ends.
This month of August, ..., never ends
Even if the tide is turning
this month of August never ends.
This month of August, ..., never ends

  • 1. luckily the pun works also in English
  • 2. lit. "between two [layers of] water"
  • 3. "une pelle" is also a French kiss and "un râteau" is also a (sentimental) rejection
  • 4. sables mouvants -> quicksand
    émouvant -> moving, stirring
  • 5. French uses "wind" to express the same idea
  • 6. pun on "on se ressert" (we refill our glasses)
  • 7. "ricocher" can be used for ricochetting stones on water, so the verb can evoke rippling laughter and skipping stones

The puns and aliterations are plentiful and rather elaborate, but somewhat heavy-handed. Feels to me like they were trying a bit too hard.
Still the song is pleasant to hear. And pretty much impossible to translate.

Oh well, I didn't expect that but that's a pleasant surprise. Thanks!
As I said these puns are mostly untranslatable, so I feared the result would sound a bit odd.
