How can I stay safe and calm?
See my God-given spouse ride off to his love
Watch my man right now suckling one more sweetheart

In a life far from my hometown
The dearest friend is my dagger
Well, you know the real world, don't you?
I indeed can die for my love

Ah, this is my inquisitive sister, so here's to my smart sister:
Dear, looks like both of us are in demand
And either of us hankers until the sun is up

Improvise to the beat
Go dance and the heart will give in to charms

  • 1. Lit. "Finish that pinga" Pinga is a religious function in honour of Bengali and Marathi goddess Durga, part of Durga Festival held annually at the end of September or the beginning of October. Originally it was a function for new wives, a sort of get-away from everyday routine. It looks like a dance, always in a circle and to a rather fast beat. The function involved elaborate dance movements so young women looked on it as a fair chance to reveal their dance skills, gracefulness and a good physical shape. Actually, it was a fitness contest, sort of "Queen of the Village" competition. Besides, it was a fair chance for women to dress up and show off. The word "pinga" comes from Proto-Indo-European *peyḱ-" with two meanings "spot, circle" and "colour". Both are in use nowadays. Small round islands are called "pingos" while the second meaning was realised through later phonetic shifts in the word "paint". Durga is believed to accept the ritual if the circle is complete so every newcomer to join in had to make sure to have linked the circle. With all these meanings in view I titled the translation in this rather fanciful manner
  • 2. This is a dance and singing contest between the two wives of Baji Rao, a Marathi legendary warrior and political leader His second wife Mastani was his war trophy

In the net you can come across some subtitles to the song. But they are sort of blind guess based on the video. One may think there's nothing meaningful to the lyrics. But when you hear the word "katari" which means "a dagger" Priyanka Chopra makes a gesture as if cutting her throat, which means the lyrics have something to say after all.

That sounds pretty colourful, but I wouldn't mind a few footnotes.
Apparently Pinga is an all-seeing deity, but I have no idea what this holy night rotation is or what the colourful circle represents.

Pierre, you'll get your fill, don't worry, dear, I've missed one stanza and struggling between Hindi and Marathi (the song is a mixture)

Well that's a lot clearer now.
Still I wonder what this "Inferior love-in-a-mist" means.
Is that the complete name of the flower, or does this "inferior" refer to some flaw in the girl?

sandringsandring    ср, 09/05/2018 - 12:54

I think it refers to the fact that Nigella (or Love-in-a-mist) is a one-season flower that blooms only once. The rival wives point out that the other one won't last long. Besides, they looked down on each other. That's where "inferior" comes from. The first wife (can't remember her name) was the official one in the status of the queen, Mastani, on the other hand, enjoyed her husband's endless love. Baji Rao kept his wives separately, they nearly never met so to each other they were like "(The other) love in a mist" Mastani being a Rajput was very good at warfare combat. She accompanied her husband to war Regular smile

I believe Mastani calls the other wife "trophy", too, hinting at "trophy wife" who keeps the house and depends on her husband in anything. Angel smile
