Выхожу один я на дорогу;
Сквозь туман кремнистый путь блестит;
Ночь тиха. Пустыня внемлет Богу.
И звезда с звездою говорит.
В небесах торжественно и чудно!
Спит земля в сияньи голубом…
Что же мне так больно и так трудно?
Жду ль чего? Жалею ли о чём?
Уж не жду от жизни ничего я,
И не жаль мне прошлого ничуть;
Я ищу свободы и покоя!
Я б хотел забыться и заснуть!
Но не тем холодным сном могилы…
Я б желал навеки так заснуть,
Чтоб в груди дремали жизни силы,
Чтоб, дыша, вздымалась тихо грудь;
Чтоб всю ночь, весь день, мой слух лелея,
Про любовь мне сладкий голос пел,
Надо мной чтоб, вечно зеленея,
Тёмный дуб склонялся и шумел.

I venture out alone along the road;
The stony pathway glows in front of me.
The night is calm; the land defers to God;
And stars engage in quiet colloquy.
The heavens are exalted and resplendent!
The Earth sleeps in a scintillating film...
But why is this oppressive pain attendant?
Are these the pangs of prospect, or of guilt?
They're neither, for I have no expectations,
And past events don't trouble me the least.
I thirst for thorough peace and liberation,
For memories and consciousness to cease!
Yet I would not desire the grave to grimly
Encase me in a somnolent demise...
I'd rather that my life's strength stayed within me,
And that, with breaths, my chest would softly rise,
And that a voice, celestial and alluring,
Would sing me everlasting songs of love,
And that, in noble greenery enduring,
A knotted oak would rustle its leaves above.

Thank you for this AMAZING translation. I can hardly find the right words to express how impressed I was barely half-way into it - you managed to perfectly preserve the rhythm, rhyme, AND the mood of the original! That's some Samuil Marshak level right there (especially, given that you have studied so many languages).

Thanks so much Felix! I really fell in love with this particular poem in college and I read it over and over. I think reading it so many times was what made it possible to do the rhyming translation. Honestly the translation basically wrote itself (I tweak it from time to time, but the for the most part it really didn't take very long). I was lucky to have a wonderful teacher at the UW, Valentina Zaitseva, who put me on a project where I made recordings of Russian actors reading poems by Pushkin, Lermontov, Tsvetaeva, Blok and other poets. The poems were all so beautiful to listen to, and I think that really helped me get a better feel for Russian poetry and poetry in general. I found myself wanting to read the Russian poems to some poetry-loving friends but unfortunately they didn't know Russian! So I thought maybe I could take a shot at translating them into English Regular smile However I often worry that I've misinterpreted the poems, so I really appreciate your kind comments and reassurance that the English version reflects the original! Thanks again
