The mallows are slumbering close to home
lulled to sleep by the moon
But my mum will not sleep
she will always wait for me!
But my mum will not sleep
she will always wait for me!
Don't wait for me, my darling mum!
I cannot come home anymore!
In my heart I feel the mallow
thrusting forth its bleeding flowers!
Don't cry, my mum, you're not alone!
Too many mallows have been brought by war!
They murmur to me in the fall :
"Good night! Sleep now!"
Other mums still have their children,
my mum has nothing but her flowers!
They grow alone by the window
and have been sleeping for a long time!
They grow alone by the window
and have been sleeping for a long time!
When you leave your home at dawn
before you people will bow down,
In the meadow many mallows
touch your hands with their warm flowers!
Life is like a melody, it must go on!
And I will live for you in songs!
If my gentleness is in vain,
Forgive me, please! We share one pain!
I used a combination of the existing translations (German is my best language out of German/Greek/Bulgarian/Russian/Ukrainian) and some help from friends. It's a bit clunky, but it gets the literal meaning across.
Mallows are a purple flower, I don't know of their significance in Ukraine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malva
