The Little Fog

Always this nasty little fog
Always these nasty little blues1
That go all the way down to your bone
And stick to your skin

It's like I can see him again,
the night his friend from the harbour
brought him the fake passport
and his visa for Buenos Aires
I don't know what he'd done
I had only understood one thing:
That his last chance was
to take the ship at dawn
And when it was time to leave
He gave me one last look
In the pale early morning
Torn apart by the sirens

Always this nasty little fog
Always these nasty little blues
That go all the way down to your bone
And stick to your skin

The footbridge was lifted
And just when I thought he was safe
Some men came
And brought him back to the ground
I don't know what he'd done
But, to not jeopardise me
He let himself be handcuffed
Acting like he didn't know me
And ever since they took him,
I spend days thinking about him
While watching the ocean liners
Decrease and disappear

Always this nasty little fog
Always these nasty little blues
Always this nasty little fog
Always these nasty little blues
Always this nasty little fog
Always these nasty little blues...

  • 1. cafard can mean cockroach, can be slang for thief, or 'avoir le cafard' can mean to be depressed. I don't really know what this was supposed to mean and no one else seems to either

Thanks! Yeah, I've translated some Edith Piaf songs before and they can be a bit difficult :)

"I thought he was safe until" - yeah I kind of read this weirdly in my head. I looked at it again and if I'm right then a better translation would be "And just when I thought he was safe, some men came"

Thanks again for your input! :)

I agree to sirènes: it is not mermaids but "sirens", "it," should be "him" and "letters" sholuld be ships or ocean liners
"until", I think, is fine.
on the other hand: "cafard" means also a little bugs, perhaps a metaphor for a traitor?

Yeah, I was a little puzzled by "cafard" in this sense. Obviously "cockroach" didn't make sense in this context, so the closest I could find was "blues" (as in, "avoir le cafard") But a metaphor for a traitor wouldn't be too far-fetched either, so I'm not really sure either way...
