Mother

In your eyes, I'm still too young
And I can't cradle you in my arms when you're asleep
Once again I want to sleep on your lap
Your soul is the heavens of love
And kindness eternally flows in your heart
And in your heart, it has no limits
Oh, Lord!

Chorus:
I love you so much, my dear, my sweet mother
And I pray for you to always stay by my side with your light
My mother, my sun, my home, my memories in photos, my guardian
You smile and I see myself in your eyes
Fill my young days with your dreams

You are worried about me
You shake like a leaf in fear for my soul and body
In your soul, there's a relentless longing
You are my hearth, my name
They say love is your endless universe
Love is your soul
Amen

Chorus:
I love you so much, my dear, my sweet mother
And I pray for you to always stay by my side with your light
My mother, my sun, my home, my memories in photos, my guardian
You smile and I see myself in your eyes
Fill my young days with your dreams

Translated through GT (Armenian - English, French, Spanish, Russian)
This translation is no joke though some ardent users try to make it look otherwise. It was made on the basis and techniques of Structural linguistics in which I have a degree. Structural linguistics makes it possible to decipher, understand and if needed translate any text in any language irrespective of whether a linguist has any knowledge of it or not. GT is just a tool that facilitates this process and makes it more enjoyable. In case you're interested

AHAHA thanks this was really good. Glad you took humour to the comments and actually did it XD Regular smile

petit élève    Недеља, 27/05/2018 - 09:05

Try as I might, I can't bring GT to produce the same result. There must be something wrong with your translation, Nadia.

sandring    Недеља, 27/05/2018 - 14:41

What exactly? Let Adelaide say, or call it ESP Regular smile

petit élève    Недеља, 27/05/2018 - 14:57

I followed your recipe scrupulously, and the final translation from Russian gives:

I'm still young in your eyes
And with my own hands, I can not support you in your dreams
I still want to sleep on your hands
And your soul is a paradise of love
And kindness flows forever in your heart
It is located in the heart of the sea,
Oh my God!

Clearly that doesn't add up!

sandring    Недеља, 27/05/2018 - 15:11

I'll explain, Pierre. Here the way it goes in Adelaida's

And endless kindness flows from your heart like an ocean
There's an ocean in your heart (it raises questions - what ocean?)

Et la bonté coule pour toujours dans ton coeur
C'est au coeur de la mer,

The word "sea/ocean" doesn't fit in, does it? Then you'll have to have a closer look at it. It's a metaphor like a sea of blood, an ocean of pain, a pool of tears. What does it give us?
Lit: And kindness eternally flows in your heart and in your heart, there's an ocean of kindness (I think, Adelaida may add that ocean of kindness)

I just got it more generally not to repeat Adelaida.

And kindness eternally flows in your heart
And in your heart, it has no limits

And so on and so forth but very fast Regular smile

TheProteanGirl    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 01:53

It's pretty clear what he means. He's saying kindness flows like an ocean because theres so much of her kindness it's like an ocean of water flowing not just a pond or something. It makes a lot of sense I see no problem with that sentence.

I try, as i've said before, to keep my translations as close to the original but with meaning so it's not random gibberish. I actually just modified it more right now.

Although Sandring you're right it sounds better the way you say it what Mihran is saying in his lyrics is what I read and translated. If there is something you reallly disagree with please tell me I'll look into it for you guys.

But as a disclaimer to you Sandring a lot of what you wrote isnt correct and may be misleading. For example Oh Lord! He never says this he's saying Father my God

Ter = Father
Im = My
Astvats = God

Or Տուր երազն իմ մանուկ օրերի, իմ մայրիկ what you wrote is wrong

Tur = Give
Erazn = A Dream
im= my
Manuk = Young child
oreri = of those days
im = my
mayrik = mother

I could go on like this for your whole translation some parts are better than mine poetically and i changed mine a bit because i agreed with you but for the overall its not correct translation

sandring    Недеља, 27/05/2018 - 17:53

Pierre, sorry for my being impatient. The synonym of Support is Hold. Just swap them and you'll see the meaning. Angel smile Sorry, sorry.

petit élève    Недеља, 27/05/2018 - 18:18

Ah well I was trying to be ironic, but anyway, you made the method plain for everybody to see.
What I did was GT the original through all the languages you cited and re-translate the final Russian into English.
I was hoping for a more amusing gibberish, but the continuous GTing produced stable results on these simple sentences.
I thought the "lap" turned into "hands" and the "heart of the sea" would be sufficiently funny.

sandring    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 09:53

My point was to show how GT translation may be used for an unknown language if really needed. Not more than that. And to have a little fun, Adelaida. Regular smile

TheProteanGirl    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 10:14

Ok my apologies if insinuated otherwise. I thought you were actually trying to translate and didn't know if you were making a satire of the GT translation or not. Thanks.

sandring    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 11:56

No, I didn't make fun of GT. With some technics and common sense, it may come in handy. Regular smile

Igeethecat    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 12:25

This was my point exactly. GT is fine for word to word translation and nothing is wrong with using it wisely. It is just when we read “human” translation, we expect to see something the other ‘human’ can understand Wink smile

Ivan U7n    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 12:40

Yes, when one understands what to expect from GT, then with (full) rewrite it will be a good translation. At first I myself used GT as a basis for my translations from and to Bulgarian, but it was mostly to compensate the lack of vocabulary.
Nowadays GT tends to give comprehensible results (if the target is English), but otherwise very far off from the original (the original, by the way, is Czech):
The glazed wall of the machine was flowing through the silver curtains of the evening rain, several pedestrians walked down the square and held a hat or umbrella.
It is so out of this world's physics! Regular smile

Ivan U7n    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 12:53

Oh, I forgot to mention that "the machine" is really a stationary cafe of some kind and can't "flow" anywhere with or without its walls. Teeth smile

petit élève    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 13:00

As far as I know, GT couldn't care less about semantics. It's just a huge pattern matching engine built on yet another of these miraculous neural networks, and trained with millions of existing translations, plus the unpaid help of millions of users.

petit élève    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 12:44

GT is the worst source of mistranslations there is, because the words are spelled correctly and bits of sentences might seem consistent even when the meaning is hopelessly off.
Apparently the thing works better with languages close to English. It has a hard time sorting out Russian declensions, its Japanese is all over the place, and the few times I tried Turkish or Chinese, the results were plain incomprehensible.

Still, idioms are usually butchered, and it can't maintain consistency from one line to the other. Basically it can only help understand very plain lyrics using the most common meaning of words, devoid of sharp metaphors, puns or double-entendres.

Then, if you know the target language well, you can make what GT told you sound nice. However, if you are unable to check the consistency with the source language, that might amount to prettifying gibberish.

TheProteanGirl    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 13:43

Sandring But be careful. That's the thing about this site. Unless you get your sources from elsewhere and you speak the language or you speak the language and can translate people cant rely on translations much here. A lot of websites test people before allowing them to be mods or participants. GT should never be used in any form because its crowdsourced infromation based on people who have translated on google and said its the translation. Unless you have one word and a checkmark next to it GT is utterly unreliable. That's why I'm saying even though what you put is for fun you don't speak the language therefore you can never be sure. That's the danger of a site like this which is similar to wikipedia but for translations. There should be real translators who are partnered with the site to verify translations. Not just mods or people like me who help.

RadixIce    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 13:49

Sorry to interrupt but, LT is a website for us to enjoy, we're not real translators, but we're trying to help people with all of our abilities.

petit élève    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 13:59

It depends on what LT is trying to achieve.

Contrary to wiki where vested interest are many, there are no real reasons for people to deliberately "falsify" a translation.
At worst people make mistakes in good faith, but by and large mistakes tend to be detected and fixed through comments and alternative versions.

Translations here don't look like professional work. The vast majority are much more literal and explanatory than something meant to be sung. In my opinion that's a good thing.
It allows amateurs to contribute while a site restricted to singable adaptations would be reserved to a few bilingual contributors.
It also gives more insights on the subtelties of the original works than nice-sounding but approximative adaptations.

Igeethecat    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 14:35

They might not look like professional, but they (most of them) are from the heart...

petit élève    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 14:10

I couldn't agree more. There is immense value in diversity.
Allowing common people to contribute in a meaningful way instead of letting the "best" impose their views is a kind of symbolic resistance to this horrible "winner takes all" ideology.
Of course there are countless terrible translations on this site, but there are also many interesting and beautiful ones that would never have existed if too many restrictions had been imposed.

TheProteanGirl    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 14:31

You guys have a point. But still it's nice to have someone verify and the ask for a verification thing doesnt do much if you use a language like mine in armenian where few participate. Plus LT is a huge site, i know Musixmatch claims its the biggest but LT is the real deal its much more professional. Anyways keep doing what you do just dont use GT please! Its really horrible. And if someone doesnt mind deleting all these comments its been a loot on this song. We can start a message if you guys want to chat more about this.

sandring    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 12:59

The glazed wall of the machine was flowing through the silver curtains of the evening rain = The glazed wall of the street cafe looked polished through the silver curtains of the evening rain The word flowing is not a verb, it's an adjective = sleek, polished, smooth. Sometimes GT is smarter than us. Devil smile

petit élève    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 13:13

Actually GT is just like a child reproducing the most frequent patterns it encountered, except GT has no semantic understanding whatsoever.

It will tend to reproduce the most common way of speaking, wiping out uncommon and original uses of language, and spewing a plain goo that even a kid can grasp. Just like social networks tend to amplify mediocrity and redefine it as a norm.

We are being dragged down by these fancy toys while we're busy looking at fluffy cats.

Ivan U7n    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 13:23

But the verb in the original is "stékaly", which is essentially "was flowing down". If one is to look from every possible angle at a GT result, then for sure there will be a work of a classic. Teeth smile

sandring    Понедељак, 28/05/2018 - 13:13

But we have common sense and life experience to add to that, don't we?

petit élève    Уторак, 29/05/2018 - 06:54

Well, once real-time translation will become commonplace and computers will start talking to us (and that shouldn't take very long), it's we who will have to get used to speaking in goo.
Maybe the privilegied few with enough time on their hands will still relish in the subtelties of languages, but I foresee a dramatic impoverishment of semantics in the next few decades.
An unexpected comeback of nuspeak, so to say. Computers might eventually be able to pass the famous Turing test, not by becoming any smarter, but by making us dumb enough to be content with their gibberish.

sandring    Недеља, 03/06/2018 - 12:30

Саша, неудобно как-то, но, все равно, спасибо! Это за смелость эксперимента, я думаю. Encouragement, так сказать. Regular smile

A.S.M    Недеља, 03/06/2018 - 12:38

Во благо.

TheProteanGirl    Понедељак, 04/06/2018 - 05:31

Guys no offence but do you mind deleteing all these comments off my transltation unless its relevant to the translation because the notifications are annoying constantly. Thanks.

Ivan U7n    Понедељак, 04/06/2018 - 05:33

This is not your translation, but there is the "Unsubscribe" button underneath.

TheProteanGirl    Понедељак, 04/06/2018 - 19:50

Sorry im getting confused as it is this song is not a forum its annoying there are so many notifications. Why dont you guys just start a forum to discuss?
But still i dont understand LT has rules as mods you guys should know. As i said before this translation is not correct and misleads readers. Im the only Armenian here, it's wrong. I dont go around translating songs I dont know the language in its just false advertisement. Stick to languages you guys know please.

petit élève    Понедељак, 04/06/2018 - 20:13

Moderation here is more of the "live and let live" kind. Discussing about (automatic) translations doesn't break any site rules, as far as I know. Even a bit of quiet joking is allowed, as long as the owner of the translation doesn't mind (namely Nadia in this case).
As Ivan said, if you're not interested in this discussion, you can unsubscribe from this page with a button you'll find a the right of "add request" and "add translation" and simply ignore it.

St. Sol    Понедељак, 04/06/2018 - 20:31

I have to disagree, Pierre: moderation here is best described as territorial, egotistical, and vengeful based on my experience (at least by some mods for sure - I won't name names), it is definitely not "live and let live" kind. Some atrocious, totally misleading translations by these mods never get corrected; also comments and suggestions to fix them get deleted (for offending the gods, no less!) all to the applause of their cheerful supporters. The integrity and quality are definitely not the traits encouraged here. Sad...

RadixIce    Понедељак, 04/06/2018 - 20:35

Just reminding, ignoring the moderator’s warnings or public discussion of moderator’s actions may lead to temporary or permanent ban.

petit élève    Понедељак, 04/06/2018 - 20:46

Well, along with field theory, that might be another topic on which our views of the world diverge.
Still, this is not really the place to recriminate about moderators, or is it?

St. Sol    Понедељак, 04/06/2018 - 20:54

As you may have noticed, my activity on LT dropped to almost zero lately - partly as a reflection of sorry state of affairs here. Well, you can't fix the world and I stopped trying long ago (that includes making sense to adepts of certain branches of physics).

petit élève    Понедељак, 04/06/2018 - 20:57

I sincerely regret that, because your translations are among the most interesting I found on this site, but still this grudge you have against moderators is not something that should be discussed in public like you occasionally do, in my opinion.

TheProteanGirl    Понедељак, 04/06/2018 - 21:22

I agree with you St.Sol thank you for speaking your mind. I am starting to translate on Musixmatch as it seems it's a more serious community with less pretentiousness and more work. I'm going to remove my translations from here soon since they are 99% all my work from scratch and put them there. I don't get how all of you know each other so well it seems to me like there is a bit of cult mentality on this website which honestly disgusts me as i am here not for ramblings but for the pure sake of translating. I legit dont care about anything else but that. Plus i dont know who you mods are as people and how reliable your comments are but it's getting to a point where i understand some messages sent to me by people telling me this is a very weird community and not to waste my time here. More so I dont know how some of you defend the notion of a "for fun" translation community. If you are doing a job in life either do it properly or don't do it. I actually want to code my own website for translating and invite serious people to join there (it would look super flat and modern as well) or go on genius or musixmatch which have millions of people contributing and is a crowdsourcing community where no mods control but rather people all have a fair say at quality. The only reason i started here was because i thought this was serious and well layout website but now I came to regret that. This is a hobby for me but all I get for my work are these weird pretentious comments that stand no justification. I do a lot of work on other websites where i mod and tutor and ive never seen this type of cult mentality anywhere i dont know how some of you were nominated to be mods, seriously. Very close minded community here. Im a scientist and i believe you do a job well or you don't there is no space for half ass work in life. By the way some of you mods are brilliant and very helpful but most are not.

RadixIce    Понедељак, 04/06/2018 - 21:21

Lyricstranslate isa website for us to help others, have fun and gain experience. If anyone doesn't agree to that idea then they're free to leave. Every website needs moderation not to be messed up and we treat our users very kindly compared to other websites. People here have fun ans if any of you doesn't like our community, then there's nothing we can do. This is enough, comments closed.
