Eagle

Don’t ask me how I am,
I won’t give you that satisfaction.
Too late to talk and too early to laugh,
Yeah that’s how it goes when someone breaks hearts.
Don’t ask me if I’ll come,
I don’t want to be where you are anymore.
Free according to Casper,1 problems too big for life,
And too small to die for.

But I don’t stay on the floor, I float overhead,
And look down on the world like an eagle.2
Then I can fly wherever I want,
With a bag full of happiness and fear in my hands,
Let it3 fall anywhere, never pick it up again,
I feel free like never before and you look up at me,
You see me gliding there, laughing and shouting,
Because now I’m happy and you’re alone.

I know I can do whatever I want.
My power screams at you, my weaknesses are silent.
The once steadfast longing is lacking foundation,
Because it was built on old happiness which has now worn away.4
Every sad day, every lonely night,
Will be farewelled5 at the edge of the city6
With fear in hand, I briefly stand still,7
In order to look above.

But I don’t stay on the floor, I float overhead,
And look down on the world like an eagle.
Then I can fly wherever I want,
With a bag full of happiness and fear in my hands,
Let it fall anywhere, never pick it up again,
I feel free like never before and you look up at me,
You see me gliding there, laughing and shouting,
Because now I’m happy and you’re alone.

Now I’m free
Now I’m free
Now I’m free

  • 1. Casper is a German/American rapper. In his song ‘Das Grizzly Lied’ the line “Probleme für's Leben zu groß, für's Sterben zu klein” translates to “Problems that are too big for life, but too small to die for.” (See AussieJunkie’s translation “The Grizzly Song” on lyricstranslate)
  • 2. literally “and I look at the world like an eagle”
  • 3. ie; fear
  • 4. literally “because it was built on happiness and the old has worn away”. I believe the sentiment here is that it was built on happiness, but happiness is not a solid foundation - ie; happiness fades.
  • 5. "Kehraus" means "last dance" or "farewell celebration" as in "the sad days and lonely nights were left behind at the edge of the city"
  • 6. "Am Rande der Stadt" typically means "on the edge of the city" or "on the outskirts".
  • 7. literally “I stay standing for a short time”

Please note: I have corrected "Wird am Rande der Stadt der Kehraus gemacht". "Chaos" was wrong.

Thanks! I've reworked the translation. I was quite confused about that line too, and only decided to stick with the transcription I found because my German wasn't good enough to hear anything else. Thanks again for pointing this mistake out (I'm sorry I didn't get to it sooner)!
