College of Literature

Sitting on the benches of the big lecture hall
The golden place is near the exit
I watch the people who fill the space
And who yawn and yawn again and yawn some more
The professor teaches a class on the history of England
1066 was the invasion of the Normans,
In 1338 there was a war
It was called the Hundred Years War

What can we laugh about in the college of literature
I have it for a few more years perhaps
What can we laugh about in the college of literature

But finally toward afternoon the course finishes
Two hours of class make you hungry and seem very long
$20 in the machine and you can eat
Some ham sandwiches without ham
The students have lunch or quench their thirst
Me, I think about Monday when I'll be at my studio apartment
Not forgetting the coal mines of England
Located in Liverpool, in Cardiff, and Glasgow

What can we laugh about in the college of literature
I have it for a few more years perhaps
What can we laugh about in the college of literature

Sitting very near me are psychology students
Little pimply guys who speak of their souls
And with great gestures, each makes his claim
On the philosophy of Kant, of Bergson, or of Sartre
The discussion becomes cute when it's a Bachelor of Literature
Little curved waistcoat, large rear cleft
Who willingly tells you, with pride, maybe,
I only read Gide, Verlaine, or Rimbaud

What can we laugh about in the college of literature
I have it for a few more years perhaps
What can we laugh about in the college of literature

I applied one correction and added format due to your prolonged absence.
