Naked and Barefoot

Верзије: #1#2#3
We threw everything into thin air1
Jugglers
Took off our splendid2 suits
Made-to-measure
Decided to send everyone to hell3
Within ourselves4
Burned a trace in the grass
Why not?

It's not easy, the surroundings will look at you sideways
If you're doing something new, different from the old-school ways5
Life isn't like a book, page after page
You're the best when how and what you sow - you yourself arrange

Look around you, is happiness what you're feeling?6
All is in order, all is great but you feel like something's missing7
The tears of the prodigal son8 on the bar you shed
You took the wrong bride - a bank you wed

You thought there's no way you'll fall into the trap, of course9
You carefully chose that political party of yours10
You accumulated money as if the road to happiness that will pave
But you'll never take your money to the grave

(But we only have wind in our hair
A defying smile, as well11
We're happy on our own, naked and barefoot on the street) 2x

We were driving in the wrong lane and in the wrong direction
We avoided crashing into the first lamppost, at the first intersection12
Kept going like that because we wanted everything too much
We were laughing while they were escorting us to the judge

We followed our dreams, closed our eyes
We were sleeping during daytime, going out during nights
Did something to remember for long
You all told us that with us, something is wrong

We don't need anyone else's hand nor anyone's auspices
We throw ourselves to the lions - what happens, happens
We ask forbidden questions, we laugh loudly
We don't have all the answers, but we understand everything clearly

Alcohol and soft drugs caused our downfall
We spit blood and got up after it all
We were dancing "Happy"13 while the world started collapsing
We started rolling so we don't stop smoking14

(But we only have wind in our hair
A defying smile, as well
We're happy on our own, naked and barefoot on the street) 2x

We grew up out of the asphalt
Like a colourful flower out of the stone
The children of the streets and walls - that's us, that's us

Our life is without illusions
We stand on our own two feet
We dream in bright colours - that's us, that's us

We only have wind in our hair
A defying smile, as well
We're happy on our own, naked and barefoot on the street

And we only have wind in our hair
A defying smile, as well
We're happy on our own, naked and barefoot on the street

  • 1. Literally: to throw in(to) the wind. This is an idiomatic expression equal to the English "to throw down the drain. "Into thin air" has been chosen instead because the world "jugglers" in the next line plays with the idiom, giving the word a dose of (sarcastic) humour
  • 2. Fun fact: "sjajan" comes from the verb "sijati/sjajiti" and "splendid" comes from the verb "splendere". Both root verbs mean - "to shine". That's why "splendid suits" is used rather than "great suits".
  • 3. Another idiomatic phrase, literally: to the devil.
  • 4. Not out loud.
  • 5. Literally: if you're doing something other than what has been already done by someone
  • 6. In the lyrics: "Are you happy?" The translation has been adapted for rhyming purposes
  • 7. In the lyrics: "but you're not complete" The translation has been adapted for rhyming purposes
  • 8. The title of a poem written by the Croatian Baroque poet Ivan Gundulić
  • 9. "Of course" is added for rhymying purposes.
  • 10. Maybe some political context is needed here...although not as prevalent as before, being a member of a political party (in power at local or government level) in Croatia can grant jobs to people who aren't necessarily qualified for the position
  • 11. "As well" is added for rhymying purposes.
  • 12. "At the first intersection" is added for rhyming purposes.
  • 13. Since there are no other English words in the lyrics, I'm quite certain that they are talking about "Happy" by Pharrell Williams, rather than saying they were happy.
  • 14. After the Croatian government raised prices of cigarettes to reduce smoking prevalence, many started to hand-roll tobacco which isn't affected by the measure and is therefore a lot cheaper.

Incredible work with the rhyming, while still keeping the main meaning!
