Disaster strikes and everything that I’ve planned has been flushed down the drain
I’ve spent my whole life toiling day and night, expecting to see a golden age, but it was all in vain
The world is crumbling, yet so splendidly do the roses1 bloom
If spring is too unreal, then reminisce the past and embrace the romance
No amount of reminiscence can help me fathom why there’s no starshine on this rainy night
I’d rather you be more like me: retreat from life with clean hands and a clear mind to see the world in plight
The leaves shrouding my body fall without a trace, yet I am happier than ever
Why bother with fortune-telling when everything’s due to end?
No fear of tomorrow, slumbering on my pillow, weeping in sorrow
I’m stranded in this space, between a rock and a hard place; so many losses did we have to face
The fear of no tomorrow, our sins unabsolved, when shall they be settled?
No retreat, can’t proceed, how do we cope with a future unguaranteed?
There was a time when I desired nothing but to only stay by your side
(Nothing I want more from this life)
But now I’m willing to be dazzled my whole life, just to gaze at the filth coating this chaotic world
(Why would I give up?)
The wind clears the desolation, leaving only a wisp of smoke
(Leaving only this pair of hands)
If it too shall pass with the falling meteors, do we have to put it out?
(There’s always a remedy)
No fear of tomorrow, slumbering on my pillow, weeping in sorrow
I’m stranded in this space, no way to secure a base; so many losses did we have to face
The fear of no tomorrow – who still dares to freely decide when we ought to depart and meet?
Finding myself in these ruins, letting the bricks and tiles and dry soil and pebbles break apart
(A world without a tomorrow, borders a-sinking, who said we’d be defeated early on?)
No tomorrow on heaven and earth, this land is all that’s left, so let’s start tidying it up
(With my own two hands, I rid you of your filth, and cut myself off from this curse)
Wiping dust off my body, paying no heed to the gloomy sky, correcting the mentality of the scattered people
(To find the beauty of the heartbeat, both for me who’s recoiling in fear, and for you who’s just been rebuffed)
May the fearless me be able to assist the helpless you in finding a turning point
The Anthropocene shall soon end, so let’s do our best in documenting this future of ours
(Bid farewell to tomorrow, and move on today)
- 1. 「荼蘼」properly refers to the roseleaf bramble, a member of the rose family. In the language of flowers, it is the symbol of finality, since its blooming marks the end of springtime.
