The Golden Peacock Has Flown Away To The East
The golden peacock has flown away to the east
It flew away to seek the days of yesterday1
Trala, trili.2
It flies, and sees: in a ravine, between cliffs,
There's a grey-haired aksasal on a white mare. 3
The golden peacock says: don't hide it,
Tell me, did you see the days that have passed?
Frowning, the old man answered the bird:
I've never met the days that have passed.
And, spurring on his horse, he vanished into the cliffs
In the mountains, his 'ha-ha-ha' echoed,
The bird is golden, and yet it's still foolish!
The golden peacock flew away to the north
It flew away to seek the days of yesterday
Trala, trili.
And it sees: having laid out his fishing net,
A fisherman rhymes words to an ancient tune:
About a sleeping child, about a bright flame,
About a pale woman sitting by a spinning wheel.
The golden peacock says: don't hide it,
Tell me, did you see the days that have passed?
Frowning, the fisherman answered the bird:
I've never met the days that have passed!
And he finished singing his song: tra-la-la,
The bird is golden, and yet it's still foolish!
The golden peacock flew to the south,
It flew away to seek the days of yesterday,
Trala, trili.
He saw a negro: in a simple hut,4
He's patching the roof up with golden straw.
The golden peacock says: don't hide it,
Tell me, did you see the days that have passed?
And the negro smiles widely in answer,5
Nothing is more charming than his smile.
Without giving an answer, he just says: huh?
The bird is golden, and yet it's still foolish!
The golden peacock flew to the west,
It flew away to seek the days of yesterday,
Trala, trili.
It sees a woman in a black veil,
She's bending over a grave in grief.
The bird keeps silent and admits to itself:
The woman in black, whose crying rings out,
There, above the grave where the grass whispers,
That is the widow of yesterdays herself.
- 1. Hmm. Is this an awkward phrasing? Could also be "to seek yesterdays".
- 2. I think this is singing noises of the "tralala" variety.
- 3. Google yields that an "aksasal" is a village elder. The "grey-haired" attribute, on the other hand, implies age.
- 4. This is a literal translation of the word used, but it could be considered offensive. Please advise if it is so.
- 5. ...Is This Offensive Please Advise....I don't know how to translate this
