ורונה [Vérone]

Verona

You who think that you've seen all
That you've tasted everything from the big sea1
You who are surprised by nothing
Welcome to Verona!
You who think that man is good
for he knows well how to write songs
And this song sounds good to you
Welcome to Verona!

Like in any other place,
there are no worse nor better people here
You who came here to visit
By mistake or by coincidence
You're in Verona, to which there's no other

In the city where everybody hates
wants to leave but remains
Here love is a distant island
Two families are the law here
And there's no need to pick up a side here
Nobody here is asked.
You're in Verona, this is Verona.
Here the poison of hatred flows,
inside our veins it beats.
Here the gardens are so blooming
Like our beautiful women
It's like heaven, like a dream
but the soul is in hell
You're in Verona

You who lie down to sleep in the evening,
feeling protected
but do not trust anyone
Welcome to Verona!

True, it's picturesquely pretty here
Here, too, people die, but from old age
And every neighbourhood is a kingdom
That's how it is in Verona

Like in any other place,
there are no worse nor better people here
You who came here to visit
By mistake or by coincidence
You're in Verona, to which there's no other

  • 1. in Biblical & poetic Hebrew this expression also means the Mediterranean. Could be read as a reference to the story taking place in Italy, a Mediterranean country

In the city where everybody hates ---> In the city that everybody hates (it)
makes more sense, or does it? - I think it does, considering the very next line
there are no worse nor better - why not there are no bad or good?

Лея, куда пропала-то? Я тут тебя в пример привожу, как молодой девушки, согласившейся мне тыкать, а тебя нет, чтоб подтвердить...

No, in the Hebrew text it's 'in the city where everybody hates (something/someone)' (=v gorode gde vsye nenavidyat), it is ungrammatical as it sounds in Hebrew. The Hebrew translation of that musical was bad in every possible way, sadly.

why not there are no bad or good?->because in the Hebrew it's relative/scalar, אין פה טובים או רעים *יותר*, hence the translation reflecting that relative adjectives.

Лея, куда пропала-то? Я тут тебя в пример привожу, как молодой девушки, согласившейся мне тыкать, а тебя нет, чтоб подтвердить... ->😭😭😭 Pashu kak papa Karlo, unfortunately. But that comment of yours made me laugh, thank you

בַּעִיר שֶבַּה כּוּלָם שוֹנְאִים - i think it could be either way.. might be each other or hates the city itself... how to know? BTW a few of the lines have minor errors... so the lyrics will be changing i suspect.

Line 13, 40
אתם בורונה, שאין כמוה

Line 34:
וכל שכונה היא ממלכה

One can know based on the grammatical analysis of the Hebrew text :) Based on it, 'everybody' is the subject, 'hates' is the predicate, and there's an ellipsis instead of an explicit object.

Well, I translated based on the written lyrics, not by ear. If the lyrics are updated, I will update my translation accordingly later on.

I'm fine with how you translated it but where is the ellipsis (...) ?

The verb 'to hate' is a verb that more often than not is complemented by a direct object in Hebrew, and here there's no explicit object, hence, an ellipsis, and the sentence thus sounding a bit weird and off to native Hebrew speakers.

Thank you for your explanation teacher! (seriously! I'm here to learn)

if it was each other they might have chosen to say כש rather than i suspect. yes?

בַּעִיר כשכּוּלָם שוֹנְאִים ?

Interesting interpretation.
'בַּעִיר כשכּוּלָם שוֹנְאִים' would be translated as 'in the city when everybody hates', which makes it slightly less ambiguous, and thus probably making the interpretation of it meaning 'in the city where everybody hates each other' slightly more likely.

If I wanted to make it explicitly clear that they hate each other, I'd probably go for 'בעיר בה כולם שונאים אחד את השני', but I do think the ambiguity in the original sentence is intended, aka, it is not clear whom they hate, hence the implication it's everyone and everything they hate existing. Which fits the themes of Verona being a city where hatred reigns.

Both translation and transliteration have been updated :)

Leah and Moshe,
here is what I think about hating and contexts.

בַּעִיר שֶבַּה כּוּלָם שוֹנְאִים is sloppy or ambiguous writing. "In the city where everybody hates" is a good equivalent in its ambiguity. Outside of the context "where everybody hates each other" may appear legit but in the context (of Romeo and Juliet story) it is not. What we know is that the city of Verona is split into two camps: the Montague one and the Capulet one. Each member of any of those camps supposedly hates any member of the other but of course, there's no hate within the camps themselves. Bottom line: a legitimate non-ambiguous translation of that line would be "in the city where everybody hates somebody" or in the ridiculous woke parlance of today "in the city where everybody is a hater"

Thank you Igor! An interesting discussion. One of the reasons i love language.
