Nunca pensé a ningum final,

So, why didn't you use "Entre luz y sombra"?

I reckoned that if I treated Schatten (which is a singular noun) as sombra instead of plural sombras someone would come along and ask why I hadn't used sombras, since using it in the singular for its princpal meaning is much less common than using the plural. But I didn't want to use the plural, because I wanted it to be singular like luz. Hence no sombra, oscuridad instead.
Why "la" ... well, why not? Spanish isn't a Germanic language like English where using the definite article in something like that phrase would be strange, it's a Romance one where it would be more usual to do it than not.
It could be though that I've misread the song and Schatten isn't used in the sense of oscuridad (the normal sense of sombras), but is referring to the memories and other things caused by the (now absent) friend as his shadow - if so, I've got the translation wrong in more ways than the choice of that word. It didn't seem to me to be doing that, but my German is nowhere near good enough to be sure. I see the other translations have used "shadow" (English) and "ombre" respectively, but they don't seem to be considering a shadow cast by the departed friend. I would have used "dark" (or "darkness") in English, and either "le noir" or "l'obscurité" in French.
