Witch of Amesbury

Susannah was a girl living in Amesbury,
with bright eyes, spoke against the lords.
Her neighbours claimed, that she knew dark spells,
that she avoided people, and dealt with devil.

That year, plague had affected the livestock,
and the superstitious villagers asked the priest for help.
"We know this impure force, that is killing the cows,
and everybody knows what is the source of this power"

So Susannah was carried in the front of the tribunal,
and while they took her through the town, people shouted:
"This is the end of your spree, you will hurt us no more,
and you will fly away on your last trip to hell."

One farmer testified, that he knows her art,
with a devilish spell she can turn to a bat,
flying over the land underneath the dark skies,
killing the farmer's cows with her magical force.

Other sworn on the Cross, that he has seen her sorcery:
during the night, the pretty girl turns into a black cat.
We need to end this devilish spree for good.
And everybody was shouting like mad: "Hang her!"

Spectral evidence [1] was carefully taken into consideration,
then a distinguished judge risen from the tribunal:
"It is written in the Book: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
And you shall always be vary of the Devil's knowledge."

Susannah stood with her head proudly up,
and her word sounded with a silent echo:
"I despite you, as you know only lies and deceit,
only because of your hearts of stone, only for them I have to die"

So they took Susannah on the hill with the gallows,
and around her were rampaging mobs.
But she stood with her head held high.
She died silently, alone, under the summer sky.
