When love is absent, when you’re in a daze
and crippled by the cold that doesn’t stop,
go on and take the pistol from the case,
go on and pawn it in the nearest shop.
Then spend it all to buy a gramophone,
and start to dance out in the light, transfixed,
(you’ll recognize the growing overtones)
ah, bring its little handle to your lips.
Heed the advice the Violinist shared,
how one should fire, settling affairs:
not at the head, but by the shoulder, there!
So as to live on, screaming in despair!
I'll bring my heart out on a saucer, agonized,
and lay it down someplace in the yard.
Friends, you will know by looking at my eyes
that none of you will ever find a heart
deep in the pink hole when it once was set,
now, there are only gramophones ahead,
and only strings of wires, stretching taut,
and only crimson water in my throat.
