Maxwell's Silver Hammer

Joan was quizzical, studied pataphysical
Science in the home
Late nights all alone with a test-tube, ohh-oh-oh-oh...
Maxwell Edison majoring in medicine
Calls her on the phone
"Can I take you out to the pictures Joa-oa-oa-oan?"
But as she's getting ready to go
A knock comes on the door...

Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon her head
Clang, clang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead

Back in school again Maxwell plays the fool again
Teacher gets annoyed
Wishing to avoid an unpleasant sce-e-e-ene
She tells Max to stay when the class has gone away
So he waits behind
Writing 50 times "I must not be so-o-o-oo..."
But when she turns her back on the boy
He creeps up from behind

Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon her head
Clang, clang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead

P.C. Thirty-One said "we caught a dirty one"
Maxwell stands alone
Painting testimonial pictures ohh-oh-oh-oh
Rose and Valerie screaming from the gallery
Say he must go free (Maxwell must go free)
The judge does not agree and he tells them so-o-o-oo
But as the words are leaving his lips
A noise comes from behind

Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon his head
Clang, clang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that he was dead

Silver Hammer Man

This song has always been an interesting false memory for me. From hearing it as a child, I was sure I remembered it ending with a verse where Maxwell falls prey to his own hammer (now acting on its own).

Would be funny... Sorry to say I don't know any version of the lyrics different from the one given here. Anyway, there might be studio tapes that practically have never been widely published.

I know, I've searched high and low. Must've been my childhood self misunderstanding and then misremembering the final verse (where the hammer "came down upon *his* head", i.e. the judge's, as opposed to "her head" in the two previous ones).

I always thought it would've been a real nice Roald Dahl-esque twist. Regular smile

I've come up with a final verse of my own though:

Maxwell isn't well
Sitting in his prison cell
Crying all alone
No-one has remembered his birthday, oh oh-oh-oh
Warden Anthony
Brings in a delivery
Maxwell looks surprised
"A present? That's so nice, who would've know-ow-ow-own?"
But as he curiously opens the box
A metal flash jumps out

Bang bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon his head
Clang clang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that he was dead

Since the judge did not agree with Rose and Valerie screaming to let Maxwell go free, Maxwell managed to sneak up behind him and let the hammer do one more fall.

BTW the chorus actually goes like this:

Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
came down upon her (his) head.
Clang! Clang! Maxwell's silver hammer
made sure that she (he) was dead.

Additionally the science was "pataphysical" Regular smile
