Трагедиям свидетель -> je ne comprends pas assez bien le russe, mais ça m'a l'air bizarre. Je pense que le "deuil mené" c'est celui de la présence de Dieu. Pendant 30 ans, il continue à servir Dieu, mais Dieu ne lui parle plus.
(каждому вольно́ грешить) -> that's a possible interpretation, though it might just mean God has truly abandonned him (instead of still being there but keeping quiet)
what sets you free -> I think it's about freedom, it liberates him (from the torments of doubt, I suppose)
my own lumpy mattress would've turned on the light -> that's a better interpretation than what we came up with in a Polish-German-French joint effort

Грешить вольно́ is most definitely just an interpretation of the general mood (people need God the punisher; they start sinning the moment they are told there is no divine tribunal).
