Atlantis

I'll recognize you by a secret message,
[And] You'll recognize me for the ring on my finger.
Our memories hold onto forgotten songs,
[And] We know the primitive dances to them.

I don't know how many years it's been since I've heard this archaic language,
Nobody understands the whispers of love anymore.
For one night, in our eternal immortality, 1
Returning back to Atlantis with you.

Out there, somewhere, beneath the waves, our ancient city rests,
Where in silence, other-worldly secrets are hidden. 2
We were in love with one-another, that's why we escaped. 3
We don't want to think this was an accident.

Fait allured us to the grey morning,
And once again we'll be lonely wanderers.
No one will know what brought us together,
These secret messages, these rings upon your fingers.

I want to hear this while the night lives on,
The secret language that no one understands.
For ten-thousand years I've waited for you,
Returning back to Atlantis with you.

I'll recognize you by a secret message,
[And] You'll recognize me for the ring on my finger.
Our memories hold onto forgotten songs,
[And] We know the primitive dances to them.

  • 1. Eternal immortality is an interesting concept
  • 2. Or the Sho-Gath, or Cthulu, or any of the other Great Elder Ones. Or it could be ye olde HP Lovecraftian racism, honestly, I prefer the latter. That's a secret I'd burry in Atlantis.
  • 3. I was going to make another joke about HP Lovecraft being racist but by this point, the dead horse just rolled over in its grave.

Lovecraft is a racist biggot, and it should be mentioned as much as possible. But much like Atlantis which has inspired countless authors and storytellers, Lovecraft has done the same. Several pop culture icons and masters of the horror genre have been inspired by Lovecraft, despite the obvious racism and bigotry. And they may seem different, with Atlantis being a lost city of an ancient civilization housing ancient treasure. However, R'lyeh (Lovecraft's own Atlantis) is no different, except it houses an ancient evil and requires the sacrifice of a virgin, pissing off the elder Gods, racism, or all of the above to find it. And by that point, it's just nothing but depressing nihilism and how helpless humans are to a superior power. So you can admire classic stories of Atlantis and the mysteries within, or be a depresso with a nihilistic approach to life and wade through a vaguely racist story about humans pissing off ancient evils all because of humans being humans and doing something stupid. Either way, when you boil it down to its parts, the impact both have had on pop culture and even other cultures and stories are massive and should be remembered, while also accepting the flaws with the stories and the intentions behind them.

This has nothing to do with the song, it's just an interesting discussion to bring up
