The Grammies (originally: "Gramophone Awards") were established in 1958, first presented in 1959, and are managed by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
For the category Song of the Year, only those songs are nominated that "contain [quality] melody and lyrics and [are] either a new song or a song first achieving prominence during the eligibility year. […]" (source: Wikipedia)
