The Porter

My brain is a house and my body a garden.
but when I'm asked1 who lives in it I have to guess.
He doesn't have a name, but he's covered in scars
which once were faces
lying hidden2 beneath thousands of layers
and in turn have millions of faces each,
full of myths and tales made of blossoms and colours
which hid their lies behind hieroglyphs.
But carried by them is a seed made of true things
that has been trying for years now to bury itself into the earth
to become a plant, a breathing body.
In it there are thousand doors but only one single porter.
He carries keys made of knowledge and a handle made of love.
His feelings are beggars, his thoughts are thieves
of the time I need to understand what I am;
frozen fire, an angry child
which, carried by wind
sinks down in its words.

And it sinks and sinks and sinks and sinks and sinks
And it sinks and sinks and sinks and sinks and sinks
And it sinks and sinks and sinks and sinks and sinks and sinks and sinks
Until it touches the ground, the base of all being.
Nothing belongs to you and everything is yours.
You are the key, you aren't the door.
There is no solution, there is only the light
which you see or don't see, be quiet 'cause it recites3
this one poem in millions of languages,
again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again
until you begin to understand:
You have to die until -
You have to die until you start seeing
You have to die until you start seeing

Who if not now and what if not us
Where if not you and by what if not here
Why if not everything and wherefore if not that
Nothingness has written a reticence4 for silence.
But why does it clench your heart to a fist when speaking?
Nothingness begot the witness and called it I.
And even though I is many, the truth remains simple.
The world is a verb, it's acting you.
And it's acting and acting and acting and acting and acting and acting and acting,...

But now you break the equation, yours unequal to mine,
we squared, divided by his5
You multiply, you add, you unite.
But the result of the formula constantly remains one, one, one, one...

  • 1. lit. "when someone asks"
  • 2. lit. "which lay hidden"
  • 3. lit. "speaks"
  • 4. not sure whether that's a fitting translation; "ein Schweigen" simply means "a not saying anything"
  • 5. or "being's"

Suggestions:
2nd line: but when I'm asked
lines 4/5: that once were faces/lying hidden under thousands of layers
lines 7/8: ... blossoms and colours/hiding their lies
lines 9/10: ... a seed ... (that has been) trying for years
2nd stanza, line 9: 'which' could be left out
line 10: ['cause it speaks (recites) this one poem in millions of languages
3rd stanza, line 5: ... your heart
The 'gerund' might work in the last two lines: The world's a verb, acting you/acting, acting, acting
last stanza (as 'tricky'to a non-German speaker!), second line: divided by (the square) itself?

Thanks for the suggestions!

" lines 7/8: ... blossoms and colours/hiding their lies"
I don't think that retains the temporal meaning of the original. The blossoms and colours hid their lies in the past, before they were used to make the myths and tales.
The same issue is with lines 4/5, but there it's not that severe since also the main clause is past.

" lines 9/10: ... a seed ... (that has been) trying for years"
I agree, but the English construct makes it sound a bit like the seed isn't trying anymore. The "now" makes it more clear, though, and I see no other way to express it in English.

" 2nd stanza, line 9: 'which' could be left out"
Yes, but then it wouldn't be as clear that it's still part of the same sentence as the previous line.

" 3rd stanza, line 5: ... your heart"
Of course. My translation here is just a re-work of my translations of the previous versions of the song, and there it said "sein", not "dein". There are several such differences and it seems I didn't catch all.

" last stanza (as 'tricky'to a non-German speaker!), second line: divided by (the square) itself?"
Might be, but that would normally be "geteilt durch sich selbst".
This artist often simply lists several personal pronouns or possessive pronouns in his texts, so I think it's just a random "his" here.
