No seas tímido

fluyan, fluyan,
fluyan, fluyan, fluyan,
fluyan, fluyan,
fluyan, fluyan.

Anto, no escribiría Solo ten ... sino Sólo ten ....

¿Qué dices?

¡Hola Andrzej!

Are you studying Spanish? I thought you knew Spanish? For Brazilians it should be easy to learn it, isn't it? I can understand both Portuguese, more Brazilian, than European Portuguese without any problem. I met a Brazilian Santos/Neymar fan :D who said that for him European Portuguese is a bit "difficult" to catch up the pronunciation... Yup there were a small "" problem but everything went really well ;)

Unfortunately no, every chance I had of really studying Spanish like I did with English was denied. And high school Spanish was a complete crap, pardon my French. But hopefully by February next year this will change.

Menção:

For Brazilians it should be easy to learn it, isn't it?

Well, it depends on several factors. Most Brazilians won't ever learn Spanish, but will do fine with some portuñol. Those that live in border areas, specially in the South, are relatively fluent in it even if they never study it due to contact with Argentinians, Uruguayans and Paraguayans. I live far from those places, so my current contact with Spanish is mostly restricted to academia (as I work for a scientific magazine on language/linguistics and usually read resúmens and proofread papers about Spanish literature/grammar), LT, social media and music. The few occasions where I had contact in person with Spanish speakers I used portuñol and it was... Weird xD Not to mention my language goofs, but let's keep them out of discussion here.

Menção:

European Portuguese is a bit "difficult" to catch up the pronunciation

It really is - like French EU-Portuguese has a lot of silent letters that when you see a word being graphically written you'll find it weird. I mean, the pronunciation is the same between actor/ator, but there's a silent C there which surprises people. And BR-Portuguese is... Well... Fast.

My recent rediscovered interest and motivation in learning Spanish has a very personal reason to me, and it was all thanks to LT :)

BalkantürkBalkantürk    Çarş, 28/09/2022 - 15:08

Thanks for the explanation very interesting :) Pedro is from Santos and he studied Spanish, as far as I remember, because his girlfriend was from Uruguay. He had a bit of accent but his pronunciation was accurated. He told me that Brazilian is like a mix of Italian and French and well European Portuguese sounded like "Russian" to a foreign ear. Also, like on every country, he told me that people from Rio have an accent very different from people from São Paulo... His accent was very clear, I didn't have any difficulty of understanding. Well... he used a lot "tá" and tá bom really funny :D

It's true, to a foreign ear, it sounds a bit like Russian. In fact, European Portuguese and Russian are two of the most phonetically rich languages in the world and that makes them especially hard to learn to speak. To me, Brazilian Portuguese sounds like a "sweeter" version of European Portuguese; like melodic, you know? I mean, Brazilians seem to use more words generally, pronounce the letters more clearly and as a consequence Brazilian Portuguese sounds more mellow and slower than European Portuguese.

Good luck with your Spanish studies if you need any help or any Montenegrin translation, I think I made 2 translations for you, don't hesitate to write me a PM :)

Not really, Juan. Just read carefully the rule I quoted from RAE and digest it:

You will for sure understand how ridiculous this rule is. It means you have to analyze whether you mean an adjective or an adverb which is written the same way as adjective, and then whether what you write is ambiguous and can be misunderstood or not. The thing is that when you write you may not think about it and may not be aware that that ambiguity exists in your sentence, because, as I said it already many times:

For this reason I always play safe, as I described and if you notice that I didn’t, it means I made a typo.

Joshua said we are losing time for this discussion. I don’t think so. It was needed, especially for those who learn Spanish. It’s only a pity that it’s here and not on the forum, because this way it will be overlooked by many users.

Even if Anto doesn't see it, I still see this ambiguity en “tan solo deja..." . I gave a link to spanishdict and apart from translations the are also examples of use con tilde that would fit here. But well, I’m just learning Spanish, so it’s just my opinion.

EDIT

Looks like not only my opinion: http://www.labroma.org/blog/2006/10/31/en-tan-solo-o-en-tan-solo/

Sí, se acepta con o sin tilde.

MissAtomicLauMissAtomicLau

Mirad https://www.spanishdict.com/translate/tan%20s%C3%B3lo.

Sadly RAE turn into a dictionary in which "almost all" is permited... They even accept slangs... We are losing how to speak properly. On the TV series or programs they use a lot of slangs and some don't vocalize :/ With "solo" I can understand the change, but it wasn't so difficult to learn when it had to be with accent and when no. Look at Hungarian accent marks, you will get a bit crazy with them :D Sólo with accent when it means "only" and can be mistaken with "alone". For me if I saw it with accent and without I won't say anything.

Foreigner case I think all accents should be marked because if not they didn't learn our language properly. My father is Spanish teacher, at school, and when it comes to writing he is strict and if he saw I wrote something incorrect via whattsap he corrects me. "Tan solo" for me is more poetical than "solo" but if you are at advance level and you know the difference between adverb and adjective go ahead and write it without accent, if you want

"Just" traduciría como "tan sólo". ¿De acuerdo?

BalkantürkBalkantürk    Salı, 27/09/2022 - 17:11

Are you referring to this sentence: "Just lift your head" Both "solo" and "tan solo" are correct and in that case when Anto wrote "tan solo" can't be also accepted "muy solo" because, in that case, the meaning is different. I am reffering at No seas tímido, tan solo... "tan solo" in the case of: "me siento tan solo" the meaning is much deeper than "me siento muy solo" as you said but that's not the case in this song. "me siento tan solo" is more poetical.

The accent mark missing in solo isn't a mistake, just a preference.

BalkantürkBalkantürk    Salı, 27/09/2022 - 17:17

When I said "sadly RAE turn into a dictionary in which "almost all" is permited... They even accept slangs... We are losing how to speak properly. On the TV series or programs they use a lot of slangs and some don't vocalize" The problem was why they had to change almost everything or add slangs to the RAE? That doesn't include "solo" case. In Spain if we saw solo with accent is not a mistake is an election. I accept both "sólo" and "solo" or "solamente" For me, if I saw it with accent and without I won't say anything... Maybe due to the difficulty Hungarian accents which make me crazy or maybe because I want to wirte things properly, but I don't find so difficult to learn to write properly Spanish accents. Some accents for me are elections and not mistakes or minor mistakes...

It must be a tough challenge with all those accents and cases.

BalkantürkBalkantürk    Salı, 27/09/2022 - 17:27

Yes and it's a challenge. For me, Hungarian is the most difficult language in Europe along with Finnish language

I think it happens in almost every country... When I went to Russia I spoke with several people and one of them was from Grozny. He talked with so many Russian slangs that was a bit difficult to catch up on conversation. Furthermore the accent was too deep. It's normal because it's Caucasus and good luck if you are a beginner and you have to talk with them. On the news, the lady spoke a properly Russian but oh dear friend when the young woman interviewed several people on the street... In Spain, once on a TV serie, I heard "hablaó" instead of "hablado" what I am conplaining is at least on series or on programs people should speak and vocalize properly. I don't know a single word in German so I can't say anything. In Polish my challenge was how to pronounce properly ł
