To improve visibility of new translations/requests in Site Activity block, we decided to filter some comments, according to the rule "no more than one comment from one node in 10 minutes."

I think it's a nice Update. I did notice how peoples are really active in the comments lately.
I have a suggestion: I think it would be a good idea to separate comments and new translations/requests/transcripts in two different site activity parts.

To make a bit more space to be able to do that we may get rid of "Trending Now". I don't feel like it is needed. One can get this information easily by checking "Popular Content."

What I would like is a simple way for the author of a translation to invite people to join a multi-user PM to discuss improvements (or chitchat, whatever). That way, most of the chatter would occur in a private space while useful posts (like initial suggestions, evaluations and general remarks of "passers-by") would remain in plain sight.

Sure, you can already do that, but I think this would become a much more common practice with a bit of extra automation. Just a way for authors to manage the invitations on a predefined PM. That should not be too costly I guess.

Just one observation:

I noticed that Site Activity block works very strangely. When I upload a translation in the evening it is always shown, but when I do it in the early afternoon hours it never appears on that bar. The are mainly comments shown.

No matter why that happens, if we separated translations from the comments this problem would be solved.

I unpublished all the comments that were off topic. Please don't spam this thread.

From that moment all new users that would comment here talking rubbish will be banned. Let's stop this madness.

[@Aldefina], [@Jethro Paris]

We fixed a bug with missing translations in the Site Activity (it was not related to the number of comments).

With new filters for comments, there are significantly fewer comments in the feed. We hope that now there is no need for two different feeds.

Apparently this new feature is just a (selective?) censorship tool, nothing more: all my comments now appear to be blocked from the Site Activity (regardless of the posting intervals which are often days, not minutes), not to mention the fact that many of my translations never show up in the Site Activity.

I noticed that comments inside replies aren't posted - I think this is a good idea.
Can you post a comment now (not in reply) so we can see if it appears?
See, the above comment is visible - now, try it on a poem of your choice.
See, my comment isn't there because of the 10-minute filter.

I think a better feature would be to assume comment shouldn't be visible unless author flags it as public.

All translations should appear in Site Activity, without exceptions.

Site Activity has become overloaded with comments, and we decided to give higher priority to translations.

Here's a full list of Site Activity filters (N = 15 at the moment):
- no more than one comment from one user per N minutes,
- no more than one comment for a page per N minutes,
- no comments from "Members Only" forum,
- no more than one request/transcription request from one user per N minutes,
- no more than one collection item for a collection per N minutes.

The problem with the comments section is that a lot of times is being used as a chatting tool. I have seen comments going on tangents that have nothing to do with the song or the translation under which they are being posted. A ruling should be placed to deter such practice rather than filtering the comments which, in a way, slows down the solving of a particular problem that might be being dealt with.

I'm a chatterbox myself, but I agree it would be better to avoid cluttering the comments with chitchat.

For instance, StackExchange has an automatic feature that detects a potential discussion (based on heuristics like the number and frequency of messages) and suggests to the involved users to switch to private messaging.

That's another variant of my previous suggestion.

1) my (and other persons') translations sometimes didn't show up in the activity field BEFORE the implementation of the last update. Folks were complaining about this and the last update efficiently solved it. ALL of mine translations do show up. I saw some of Sol's too, so I don't think he is blocked out due to some secret conspiracy.
2) Few comments come through. That's good. Folks (including myself) chit-chat a lot and spam this activity block, so other folks who only post translations were missing a chance to showcase (yet briefly) their work.
3) If it possible please do a separate field for chatter boxes, which will not show up in the activity block, but will allow exchange between users. Chat room is not efficient. Related to the translation or not, such discussions sometimes unavoidable and often are quite useful. I saw collective multi-page efforts of improving a single translation. Sure some jokes slipped through, but it is a human nature.
Thank you for improving this site, small things matter
