Angel

The knife at the throat, the noose around the neck
Give 1me your most beautiful smile, seductive and fake
You crawl into my soul, who's allowed you to?
And every one of your lies digs deeply, deeply into my skin

You are not an angel 2
Who made you?
(Innocent) angel, that's even darker than the night
(Innocent) angel, you have the devil in your body
You are not an angel
A happy wicked woman

The poison in your eyes, that which is in my blood
Pull me into your abyss
I know it all too well
You tell me the most beautiful fairy tale with murderous desire
The fire of your sins burns so deeply, deeply in my chest

You are not an angel
Who made you?
(Innocent) angel, that's even darker than the night
(Innocent) angel, you have the devil in your body
You are not an angel
A happy wicked woman

You are not an angel
You are not an angel
You are not an angel

You are not an angel
Who made you?
(Innocent) angel that's even darker than the night
(Innocent) angel you have the devil in your body
You are not an angel
A happy wicked woman

  • 1. Schenk(en) means to give something as a gift. Give sounds better than "to gift" here though since it is an infrequently used English verb.
  • 2. Unschuldsengel sein is a German expression that means "to be an angel". This is an English expression too that is more understandable with the omission of the word "innocent" (hence the meaning of Unschuld). "To be an angel" means, to be innocent, not to be mischievous, showing exemplary conduct and be nearly a perfect human being. Since the person in this song is not an "angel", she does not display such characteristics, contrary to what she likely believes.

I think "innocent angel" might not be totally correct. "Innocent," as an adjective, would be something like "Unschuldig." Seeing as they're one word, "Unschuldsengel," I believe "angel of innocence" would be a little more accurate.

Possibly. German is a pretty hard language to teach yourself, but one consistancy I've noticed is their habit of putting words together.

I'm not so sure about this. After your comment, I did some research and found out that "ein Unschuldsengel sein" or "ein Unschuldslamm sein" means the same thing as the English expression "to be an angel". You know, in the sense of being innocent, not being mischievous and showing exemplary conduct. Since the woman described in this song is not an angel, she does not display those characteristics. I'm not sure that either my original nor your suggestion actually mimic the English expression and what they intended, so I'm going to put the word innocent in parentheses and remove it from the song title. Thank you for the comment and I understand this expression better now that I've researched it. :)

And through a proper translation, my understanding of the language grows. Im diese Land, alle Bildung ist so teuer, doch jetzt, Lehrerinnen sind lacherlich überholt. Die Götter hab' uns das Internet schenkst.

...doch ich bin vom Perfektion leider weit. In any case, thank you for the translation!

Just a little correction, I think you meant to say "die Lehrer sind lacherlich überholt". ;) Lehrer is plural of Lehrer (teachers of any gender), while Lehrerinnen is plural of Lehrerin (only female teachers).

In response to the three of your comments:
(eins) I feel stupid now. Fake smile works better than wrong smile! Wrong would mean inappropriate and I assumed it to mean that but a fake smile makes more sense!
(zwei) Thanks for pointing out the little section I missed and providing a translation. I think I was a bit confused on the phrase and decided to skip it, come back later...never happened.
(drei) Thank you so much! When I proofread your translation, I was considering asking you how you had the footnote links. That is extremely helpful. :) I will start editing my translations to make them easier to follow.
