>"Yes, Virginia, now Santa's doin' time"
Any special Virginia meant hereby?
>"For the good gentile girls"
Should one interpret "gentile" here rather more as "christian" or as "pagan" ("heathen") ?
>"Something finally must have snapped in his brain"
The translators have translated it as "Something must have gone broken in his brain" or "he went insane".
Isn't it that the meaning is: "All of a sudded it made "click" in his brain" in the sense of: All of a sudden he comprehended something, all of a sudden he became aware of smth. ?
Virginia - Not that I know of, but it might be a movie reference, or a reference to another song. I think he's probably referencing something but either can't remember what it is or don't know the reference myself.
gentile - I always grew up thinking that it was a Jewish word for Christians. I think that's how it's normally used. Christians don't typically call themselves gentiles. But Jews do use the word to describe christians. I've never heard it used for muslims. There aren't too many pagans around anymore, so I wouldn't hear it used for them either.
-"to snap" means to go crazy, or to suddenly get really angry. Think of a rubber band than keeps getting stretched until it finally snaps-that is, breaks. Then again, something can "snap into place" which would have the opposite meaning, but that clearly isn't what's meant here. "click" definitely has the connotation that you're talking about.
Thank you for the excellent reply, qf.
Interesting.
In German we use the verb "schnappen" for "to snap".
It is colloquial and can be used in different ways:
"Die Polizei hat den Dieb geschnappt"
"Ich schnappte mir einen Kugelschreiber und schrieb"
"Die Tür ist ins Schloss geschnappt"
oder:
"Tante Hilda ist eingeschnappt" meaning:
Aunt Hilda is huffish (huffy, miffed, moping; [all from the dictionary])
auch:
"Dieses Wort habe ich in den USA aufgeschnappt"
