Lay an egg

To fail especially in a public performance

to do something bad or poorly

To flop, to fail, to fall short, to really meet with disapproval in/with a crowd. In the British sport of cricket when you fail to score, you get a zero. The mark then looks like an egg '0'. The term is also used in baseball, where a zero is a "goose egg."
In a literal sense it is when a bird or cold-blooded animal deposits eggs outside of its body. The easiest, a chicken lays eggs.
