Pierre, the funny thing about this picture above is that it looks like a sample of Soviet propaganda. Peasantry kids never had beds of their own. They usually slept on the comfiest and warmest sleeping place in the house - on the Russian stove. It's a combination of masonry stove and an oven with a few interior departments.

The words of the lullaby "Не ложися на краю. Придет серенький волчок и укусит за бочок" meant to scare a child sleeping close to the edge because falling off could be painful or fatal. There's a Russian saying Ты что, с печи свалился? = Are you crazy? The song modern variation Я всегда ложуся с краю looks more like a fight between a husband and wife who'll take the
"aisle seat" for the night or will sleep next to the wall. :D
