Translation

Friends

The day we kissed,
...I couldn't even look my mom in her face
We gathered the coins from our pockets...
...and counted them one by one as we counted our dreams

Those are our hidden...
...secret memories

When did our friendship start to break?
Back then, when we felt down, we simply looked at each other

When we linked our fingers,
...I felt the time stopped

Do you remember...
...the song that suits the sunset?
You would always fall silent...
...when you were sad and I would hum it for you

And now the time keeps flowing and the melody turns into sepia

We can't go back to that time, my friend
You look more distant than stranger now
We were always running together
I miss those eyes

When did our friendship start to break?
Back then, when we felt down, we simply looked at each other

When we linked our fingers,
...I felt the time stopped

We can't go back to that time, my friend
You look more distant than stranger now
We were always running together
I miss those eyes

Rebecca was once a very popular pop rock band active in mid 1980s to 1991.

Their members have changed several times but these are their current members:

- Nokko (born: November 4, 1963), real name: Yamada Nobuko, vocal

- Dobashi Akio (born: September 19, 1960), current leader, keyboard

- Takahashi Noriyuki (born: December 10, 1959), bass

- Odawara Yutaka (born: February 6, 1963), drum

*among their ex-members, the notable mention is: Kogure Takehiko (born: March 8, 1960), the founder, former leader, composer and guitarist of the group.

Rebecca was formed in 1982 as an amateur band by Kogure Takehiko. The name "Rebecca" was inspired by Kate Douglas Wiggin's novel: "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm". It started with male vocalist but then they recruited Nokko who was a vocalist of another band back then. July 1982, Kogure (the leader) and Nokko went to Los Angeles to try to sell their demo tape in the US to no success, so the two returned to Japan with their band in temporary hiatus. They restarted the band in January 1983, won CBS/Sony audition in August 1983.....and made their professional debut on April 21, 1984.

Their first year was tough with their first two singles couldn't even make it into top 100 in Oricon chart. January 1985, Rebecca took another blow with their founder/leader/composer/guitarist: Kogure Takehiko and their drummer left the group. Somehow they could survive with new members. April 1985, their third single entered Oricon chart for the first time although only at #54. Then came their fourth single "Friends" in October 1985 that exploded into a big hit, followed by their fourth album that reached #1 in Oricon chart and sold 1.3 millions copies one month later. After that, hit songs and high selling albums started to follow.

About this song

Released on October 21, 1985, this song reached #3 in Oricon chart with 307,000 sales. This is their signature song and their biggest hit. This song was written by Nokko herself, based on true story of her first love when she was in her 3rd year of junior high school.

It was used as ending theme for a drama

Their live performances:

^ in "The Best Ten" that had their own ranking system different from Oricon chart, this song was ranked #6. That was probably their first time in "The Best Ten"

^ this was probably in "The Top Ten" (before they changed the show's name into "Uta no Top Ten")

in 1987:

^ Nokko was cute!

in 1990:

In their career, Rebecca have released a total of 17 singles and 7 original albums. There's no information about their total sales but their total singles sales are 1,954,000.....AND then they have 1 album with 1,300,000 sales and three more albums with 800,000+ sales each. Although they don't have an Oricon #1 ranked single, their last four albums all reached #1 in Oricon chart consecutively.

Rebecca as a band have no acting career at all. Nokko, the vocalist, has appeared in 3 dramas (1997-2012, all as guest roles) and 1 movie (1989). Well, they're not "idols".

Rebecca disbanded on February 14, 1991. They had two short reunion in 1995 and 1999. They finally reunited permanently in 2015, and as if that's not enough a good news, they earned their first ever - and highly deserved - performance in Kohaku Uta Gassen 2015!! (*so in total, Rebecca have 1 Kohaku performance).

Omg, I know their band! I stumbled upon it while listening on shuffle on spotify (wich, to be fair, is also how I found Minako Honda, Yumi Morio and BaBe), I like them a lot! Still haven't dived in their discograhy much tho ^^"

Also, the band I was talking about yesterday is Norma Jean! (Norma Jean is Marilyn Monroes birth name)
They formed in the mid 80's and professionally debuted in 1991, with their song GET A CHANCE!! (Same title as that BaBe song) landing at number 8 on the oricon charts!

Yeah, they're so cool, I couldn't wait to add them. I love Nokko voice (and Ota Hiromi voice, and anything resembles that 😅). And her stage name is cute. 😅

Their total sales must be around 6 millions+ to 7 millions+.

No, I haven't heard about that that band. For all-girl non-idol Japanese band, I only know PuriPuri and Show-Ya.

Feedeeri☆Feedeeri☆    Wed, 04/10/2023 - 12:59

True, Nokko sounds so cute!

I think I've seen Show-Ya around, never knew who they where tho (but I guess I do now ^^)

I only know their band name and that they're all-girl rock band. Haven't listened to their songs yet. Since they're from the same period, maybe they're Princess Princess rival.

Nokko, Nanno, Chao, Mikarin, Miporin, Sacchin.... they really know how to make cute nicknames. 😆

Feedeeri☆Feedeeri☆    Wed, 04/10/2023 - 17:25

Don't forget about Michon, Nao Nao & Yoshi Yoshi (Even if these weren't official nicknames XD), Miyo-Chan, Agnes-Chan, Hiroring, Kumin, Kyon Kyon...the list is endless!

But idol catchphrases could also be cute or interesting, like: 45% fairy, Would you like to be my friend? (the cutest idol catchphrase in my opinion!), a little princess from a wonderful land (ok, maybe this is the cutest), Will you keep me company?, Sepia-colored secret, but some catchphrases I've seen can be a bit weird

Nao Nao & Yoshi Yoshi were the ultimate duo when they sang together with piano 😆. And Kyon Kyon is the ultimate nickname, it sounds like "pyon~" (*bunny version of "nya~"), I don't even want to call her Koizumi Kyoko anymore. 😅

There's also Hiroring, Yoshiring, Seiko-chan, Shi-chan, Tororing (a.k.a Tomomi, everyone's little sister). Nori-P also has a variant called "NoriPe" (because her Horikoshi classmates didn't know how to pronounce Nori-P). I've seen someone called Saito Yuki as Yukirin on YouTube comment but I don't know if that's her real nickname or it's just that person.

lol, their catchphrases are too long, I can't remember them. But I've impression that Yukko's catchphrase sounds sad though I can't remember what's exactly said.

Feedeeri☆Feedeeri☆    Wed, 04/10/2023 - 18:21

Yukirin sounds so cute ヾ(≧▽≦*)o, but I also wouldn't mind call her Pyon Pyon, that sounds like the name of a cute plushie!

Yukkos catchphrase is "A little princess from a faraway land"!

Then I remembered it wrong. I thought it has something to do with the premonition of her death.
