Rebecca was once a very popular pop rock band active in mid 1980s to 1991.
Their members have changed several times but these are their current members:
- Nokko (born: November 4, 1963), real name: Yamada Nobuko, vocal
- Dobashi Akio (born: September 19, 1960), current leader, keyboard
- Takahashi Noriyuki (born: December 10, 1959), bass
- Odawara Yutaka (born: February 6, 1963), drum
*among their ex-members, the notable mention is: Kogure Takehiko (born: March 8, 1960), the founder, former leader, composer and guitarist of the group.
Rebecca was formed in 1982 as an amateur band by Kogure Takehiko. The name "Rebecca" was inspired by Kate Douglas Wiggin's novel: "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm". It started with male vocalist but then they recruited Nokko who was a vocalist of another band back then. July 1982, Kogure (the leader) and Nokko went to Los Angeles to try to sell their demo tape in the US to no success, so the two returned to Japan with their band in temporary hiatus. They restarted the band in January 1983, won CBS/Sony audition in August 1983.....and made their professional debut on April 21, 1984.
Their first year was tough with their first two singles couldn't even make it into top 100 in Oricon chart. January 1985, Rebecca took another blow with their founder/leader/composer/guitarist: Kogure Takehiko and their drummer left the group. Somehow they could survive with new members. April 1985, their third single entered Oricon chart for the first time although only at #54. Then came their fourth single "Friends" in October 1985 that exploded into a big hit, followed by their fourth album that reached #1 in Oricon chart and sold 1.3 millions copies one month later. After that, hit songs and high selling albums started to follow.

In their career, Rebecca have released a total of 17 singles and 7 original albums. There's no information about their total sales but their total singles sales are 1,954,000.....AND then they have 1 album with 1,300,000 sales and three more albums with 800,000+ sales each. Although they don't have an Oricon #1 ranked single, their last four albums all reached #1 in Oricon chart consecutively.
Rebecca as a band have no acting career at all. Nokko, the vocalist, has appeared in 3 dramas (1997-2012, all as guest roles) and 1 movie (1989). Well, they're not "idols".
Rebecca disbanded on February 14, 1991. They had two short reunion in 1995 and 1999. They finally reunited permanently in 2015, and as if that's not enough a good news, they earned their first ever - and highly deserved - performance in Kohaku Uta Gassen 2015!! (*so in total, Rebecca have 1 Kohaku performance).
