Midwinter Joy
When the sun hides itself
behind the circle of the Earth
Here in the North we fall
into slumber for a moment.
But don't think we grieve,
no, we prepare to celebrate
and open our arms
to welcome each guest
Look, everything that has wilted
recovers again its power,
and we greet back the light
to give us what we had.
But forget not to rest
it will be summer one day,
but in the midwinter darkness
we'll stay for a while.
We have baked
We have cleaned
We have decorated each house
We have filled all bowls
We have drink in each cup
And see the earth wear a blanket
of the whitest snow,
and we travel to each other
over an ice-covered lake.
So let us now be happy
with food and music.
We midwinter rejoice
for everything is the same as it was.
