The Klabautermann

In the ship's cabin the lamp keeps swinging
Men sitting around the table
From the laughter, singing, cursing
The walls around resound

Outside the storms, waves are roaring
The sails are beating in the night
the spray is thrown, high as a house
That the Brigg is croaking in all her joints (1)

Only the cowardly sailmaker in the cabin
Blasphemes the old sailor's yarn (2)
"We're your masters, you sea ghosts of old"
Masters of wind and sea

Suddenly a loud bang, the hatch goes pop
Horror paralyzes every single man
Dripping wet, pale as a ghost
In the room stands the Klabautermann (3)

Points at the Sailmaker, a scream of anguish
The blasphemer sinks dead into a lump

In the ship's cabin the lamp keeps swinging
Outside the wind played with the rigging
And the blue light of the moon
Swallowed up a shadow

Outside the storms, waves are roaring
The sails are beating in the night
the spray is thrown, high as a house
That the Brigg is croaking in all her joints

"And the blue light of the moon // Swallowed by a shadow" => "... // Swallowed a shadow". It's the moon swallowing the shadow, not the other way around (that would be "Ein Schatten verschlang" in this lyrical rearrangement of word order).
