It Snowed on Yesterday
It snowed on Yesterday
The night they left us.
The fog at sea has fallen asleep
And it swallowed up Yellow Submarine.
End Jude is living alone in a cottage in Chelsea.
I believe John and Paul are the only ones
She has written to.
Old Sergeant Pepper lost his medals
During the last chorus of Hello Good-bye.
Hello Good-bye!
It snowed on Yesterday
The night they left us.
Penny Lane has two kids today,
But it rains a lot in springtime on the Isle of Wight.
Everybody from Eleanor Rigby to the four musicians
Come one at a time to see you
When they pass through Dublin,
To talk to you about Michèle,
La belle in her younger years,
About those mots qui vont si bien ensemble,
Si bien ensemble!1
It snowed on Yesterday
The night they left us.
Penny Lane is already far away now,
But she'll never have white hair.
It snowed on Yesterday
That year, even in the summer.
While gathering her flowers,
Lady Madonna shivered,
But it wasn't cold... [x3]
- 1. If the Beatles can put those words in their song, I can keep them in my translation.

This is a translation of the Submitter's Comments accompanying the French lyrics:
.
Written by Michel Jourdan (a lyricist of some repute, notably for Mike Brandt) less than ten years after the Beatles broke up. It's a song with a mixture of the Beatles and the characters in their songs: Penny Lane, Sergeant Pepper, Jude, Michèle, Lady Madonna... It evokes the things that happened, seen from the point of view of 1977, a sort of emotional "What's become of them since then?" underlined by the melody that is reminiscent of the song Yesterday itself.
.
This song by the beautiful Marie Laforêt lets us wallow a bit in the nostalgia and the regret that it evokes. An ultrasensitive song that gives you "Liverpool bumps!" [I can't really translate what it says in French here. The French expression "la chair de poule" means "goose bumps." Our mischievous submitter has made a clever play of words on the French word "poule" by replacing it with the rhyming word "Liverpool." As usual, it's always funnier in the original language.]
.
As for the guitar chords, it's rather complicated to play, but I'm giving you the link anyway, for the more talented among us.
.
For all Beatles fans . . . and Lord knows there's enough of us!
