This World: Loading...

This world is a game, a word game
This world is a game, let's save here

A baby's cries mark the start of a new game
A plot that starts with a 0 year old kid
The stats to be popular? A quick boy or a clever girl?
That's just the luck of the draw in this world
Comparing specs, lined up cast
I can't become the person I wanna be
Ahh, I'm at my limit

My academics and parentage are my status?
I don't wanna be an adult, but the days keep coming
Before I know it I'll be bound by it all

Obsessed with our looks, we pass each other by
There's no manual so it's up to us
I reset my tedious life with my middle finger

This joke of a game, raising my level
I want to win, this world is a game

Being told "do this" or "do that"
The nitpicking is a pain in the ass
There's no point to doing things like you're told
I always wanna use my brain
But I'm scared of being different
The feeling of doubting if I'll get better
No extra lives, no extra lives, no extra lives, in this life
I am the player, there is no change

A life as a corporate slave is a premium feature
What you can't say on a resume's important too, alright?

Standing above the scum
The KO ranking in Easy Mode
Nothing's going my way, but still GO GO

My academics and parentage are my status?
I don't wanna be an adult, but the days keep coming
Before I know it I'll be bound by it all

Obsessed with our looks, we pass each other by
There's no manual so it's up to us
I reset my tedious life with my middle finger

The perspective of an idiot that can only look north
You're only going to be tricked again at this rate

Keep walking, on-rails gameplay
Or bowing your head, in a fixed race
Struggling daily with people for points
Look, soon I'm going to be fed up with it all

Pointlessly dying defending the young or old, hell no!
Tests, reports, constant overtime work
With HP items I'll Continue everyday
At this rate it'll never end
In this world, 1UP. It's not over yet.

My academics and parentage are my status?
I don't wanna be an adult, but the days keep coming
Before I know it I'll be bound by it all

Obsessed with our looks, we pass each other by
There's no manual so it's up to us
I reset my tedious life with my middle finger

A life as a corporate slave is a premium feature
What you can't say on a resume's important too, alright?

Standing above the scum
The KO ranking in Easy Mode
Nothing's going my way, but still GO GO

At least, that's what I thought...

this song is perhaps too flippant to use the Shakespeare reference
踏んだり蹴ったり might be better as just "nothing's going my way"
this isn't my suggestion; it's just that you been called out

I think the direct translation of 摂理 to "providence" is likewise a bit chunky
to keep with the game metaphor, maybe it could be something like "the rules had been set when we loaded in"

so what's your own ethos when it comes to translation?

Hahah I guess I WAS called out.
I'm familiar with the author of that article. They've contacted me about some of my translations before, and I know they have a different translating style than I do. I suppose I do wish they'd contacted me about this line rather than calling it out but it's obvious they take song translation more seriously than I do and I commend them for standing up for what they believe.
And I mean, this translation of mine WAS pretty awkward in a number of ways. So I just took a few minutes and went back and rewrote it significantly. Took out the shakespeare line too. I remember when I wrote it I thought it was clever but yeah it doesn't match the tone very well. Hopefully the whole thing's a bit smoother now.

I'm glad you asked about my ethos... Ultimately, for me, song translation started as a hobby and a way for me to keep studying Japanese. I didn't put the STYLE into it that the author of the article cares for so much. I went with a stark, true-to-the-japanese approach because the Japanese grammar is what I was focused on while I was learning, but which lead to some awkward English. It's not that that was my ETHOS per se, but it's just about all I could manage at the time, or all the effort I wanted to put into a hobby.
But going back and reading some of my past translations now is ROUGH. Mis-translated words and mis-read meanings galore, and some very awkward lines, so I do understand when people have qualms. Current ethos? I do care now more about smoothness of reading and understanding in English even if it means a looser translation. I want people to be able to read along to my lyrics as they listen to the song and understand the meaning clearly. (For example: I personally definitely don't write my lyrics so that someone could hypothetically sing them to music to make an "english version" of the song. So I still don't share the "rhythm preservation" focus that the author of the article has, but that's how personal translating preference goes I guess, and I think it's cool that it's their focus and goal when translating.)

The problem is that I don't have the time or the energy to go back through all my old translations and make sure they'd fit my current standards/Japanese level. So instead, if anyone has a problem or suggestion with one of my translations, all I can hope is that they'll comment nicely and inform me to bring it and the song to my attention, and then I can fix it and while I'm there I can look over the whole song and re-write it if necessary.
So thank you for commenting nicely. :) (And I'm genuinely sorry for the long, ranty answer haha)
