A Brownie
Click to see the original lyrics (Russian)
The dark path leads home
The light path leads to you
It's quiet behind my back
The brownie* has hidden
He is napping in the chimney
I wish it was known where the treasure were hidden
You would immediately look up
Shoot the arrows at the target
Who would blame you for
April's first thunderstorm
Growling again
What the mute has said
Will go away with me
As a wire on a power pole
Just close your eyes
My brownie howls as
A wolf in the chimney
What I've lost in the meadows
She worships at the foot
She asks to be fondled
The berries are pulling down
And the flowers intertwined
Into a rainbow in her hair
By the forests' edges
Is where my friends
Maria, Rose'n'Bay** wander
A cloud on the sky
I'm telling you
The word of mine "farewell"
The word of mine "farewell"
The word of mine "farewell"
The dark path leads home
The light path leads to fate
It's quieted down behind my back
The brownie has hidden
It's napping in the chimney
The word of mine "farewell"
The word of mine "farewell"
The word of mine "farewell"

*By Brownie a mythical creature protecting the house is meant.
**Rose'n'Bay is actually a rosebay, a kind of herb. The author uses a play on words: in Russian a rosebay is иван-чай [ivan-chai], Иван is a name, чай is tea. The poet makes the herb seem to be a real person: Ivan-and-Chai. I tried to make up an analogue in my translation.
