It is said that this song originated in world war 2 when some 3000 Serbian civilians from Sarajevo were being transported to a concentration camp in what is today Croatia. They were to be executed at dawn on May 6th (St. George's Day by Serbian Orthodox calendar). During the voyage, one of the "travellers" began to compose and sing this song. More prisoners began to sing along, and eventually the entire wagon was in song, and thus, singing, they greeted the dawn and met their deaths.

The original version of this song, predating the one sung during the incident in WWII, is apparently an old Roma folk song also dedicated to the Feast of St. George, but with completely different lyrics.
