Starostele și cobzarul
Ce-am cântat pe la domnii
Și la mândre cununii.
 
Cobza mea era vestită,
Veac întreg a fost cinstită
De boierii de pe-aici,
Ba chiar și de venetici.
 
Of, of, of, mi-aduc aminte,
Of, of, of, că mai 'nainte
Niciun chef nu se făcea
Fără astă cobz-a mea.
 
Dar acuma, amar mie!
De când lumea-i pe nemție
Nu mai am în lume glas
Și pe ulițe-am rămas.
 
Translation

I Am Barbu the Fiddler

I am Barbu the Fiddler,
The conductor and the kobzar,
Who has played for many boyars
And to beautiful wedding ceremonies.
 
My kobza was well-renowned
And honoured for a whole century
By the boyars in our land
And also by foreigners.
 
Oh, oh, oh, I remember well,
Oh, oh, oh, that in the old days
No party was held
Without my very own kobza1.
 
But these days, oh, poor me!
Since people started to imitate the western fashion2,
My voice has no longer been heard in this world
And I’ve remained on villages’ streets.

  • 2. modern western clothes were intitially called “German clothes” = haină nemțească, haine nemțești

Some suggestions :)
I don't know any Romanian, so if my suggestions don't agree with the Romanian just disregard them :)
Verse 2, line 1: 'well-renowned'
Verse 4, line 1: 'but these days...'
Verse 4, line 2: 'Since people started to dress/dressing in this western fashion'
Verse 4, line 3: 'my voice is no longer (being) heard in this world'
Verse 4, line 4: 'on the streets of villages'

Agree on 1, 1 and 4.
2. It doesn't refer only to clothing. It implies that, but it rather refers to western trend in general.
3. Shouldn't we use present perfect or present perfect continuous with "since"?

Thanks for your feedback. I'll wait for you to review points 2 and 3 (again) and I'll change the lyrics afterwards.
