Here, After, Us
Afterwards, they claimed that your heart seems to have healed
And there is someone looking after you
Should I be relieved or anguished?
Afterwards,
my days go on as usual
Apart from times where memories wreak havoc
Thankfully, I have tears to dilute the bitterness
Those past days remain vivid in my mind
Treasured deep within my heart
Perhaps you still remember, or perhaps you had forgotten
But it no longer matters
I only wish for you to be happy afterwards1
That is what I would have wanted afterwards
In the future, we are still walking
Only not together
Instead, we went in pursuit of our own lives
No matter how the story develops afterwards
We must live our lives fully
After us, I hope to
Witness your freedom, albeit amidst tears
My dear,
do you recall the winding roads that we trod upon
Those were the experiences leading us to this moment
We learnt to give and take in our lives
Packing up past regrets with newfound happiness
Embarking on a new journey to the future
No matter how reluctant I am, I must still break away ruthlessly
Don’t look back at me, my dear2
I only wish for you to be happy afterwards
That is what I would have wanted afterwards
In the future, we are still walking
Only not together
Instead, we went in pursuit of our own lives
No matter how the story develops afterwards
We must live our lives fully
After us, I hope to
Witness your happiness and joy, albeit amidst tears
In another world, the other you decided to stay by my side3
There, the other me smiles broadly
The other us are still deeply in love
Replacing us till eternity
That thought alone is sufficient for me
No matter what happens in the story afterwards
We have to make our future lives worth it
After us, I hope to
Witness your freedom, albeit amidst tears
- 1. The original lyrics made it clear that the term ‘you’ in the lyrics refer to a future ‘you’ literally. I’ve interpreted it as ‘you’ after breaking up; even though the lyrics don’t mention the term breaking up explicitly, but the meaning is implied given how Ashin keeps emphasizing the difference between future ‘you’s and ‘me’s and the past ‘us’. This bit was particularly hard to translate, the reason why I kept delaying in translating this.
- 2. A common theme in Chinese pop songs is unrequited love. Ashin has written plenty of love songs describing this theme, from Embrace (When you finally realise my love, the moonlight would have dried my tears) to I Won’t Let You Be Lonely. Most fans think that this line contains a reference to I Won’t Let You Be Lonely, where Ashin wrote, ‘Don’t look back, just keep flying ahead’.
- 3. The Chinese lyrics refer to this as ‘somewhere’, but Ashin had mentioned in his microblog that he was referring to an alternate universe in this song.
