Juan Without Land

I will sing a ballad
of a man who went to war
who walked wounded in the mountains
to conquer his land.

I met him in the battle
and amidst so much gunfire
he who is a revolutionary
can die where he wants.

The general told us:
"Fight with great courage,
we will give you plots of land
when there is redistribution."

My father was a farm peon
and I a revolutionary,
my sons opened a store,
and my grandson is a civil servant.

Emiliano Zapata yelled:
"I want land and liberty,"
and the government laughed
when they went to bury him.

Fly, fly, little dove,
perch on some fig tree
because here ends the ballad
of Juan Without Land.
