So as to better unite

We checked how many tomorrows
we had left but, hesitant,
we lost our way on a path.
A stranger in the daily grind1
Fake smiles would do no good,
for (this relationship) was doomed from the start2.

Initially we were nothing.
Just a sketch or a drawing.
Dreams followed by trailing dots.
At street corners, a sweet scent,
supreme idyll, hand in hand,
nice pictures we remember.

Since we lose each other in order to better unite
Since we don't care about the present anymore
The merest breath destroys us
and blows us asunder with the winds

Like joined fools3, like two children,
like a flower in its spring
we fled the shadow in order to better lie down
on our clouds, in broad daylight,
fulfilled with love and innocence
as we recalled the memories ouf our twenties

If we allow ourselves a bit of time,
to simply ponder things
before we become nothing but losers
as we taste the bitterness that comes with it4 ;
before the storm that, as for it,
never ever waits for the time to wait5

Since we lose each other in order to better unite
Since we don't care about the present anymore
The merest breath destroys us
and blows us asunder with the winds

All these lies we disguise
leave us one day defenseless
since we lose each other in order to better unite,
since we still love each other just as much.

  • 1. lit "an unknown variable and/or (feminine) person in the chorus/repetitive events of life"
  • 2. lit "the begining played the end"
  • 3. weak pun on "fous à lier" (stark mad)
  • 4. "s'en ressentir" is used in the very unusual sense of "(something) that causes you to feel (something)", while the usual meaning is "to be affected negatively (by something)".
The global meaning is something like "we'll know we've become losers when we start feeling the bitter taste that comes with it".
  • 5. This makes precious little sense in French too.
Something like "we should allow ourselves time to consider (our relationship) (insert babble about losers here) before the storm hits, and the storm (contrary to us) is never ever patient".
