The Raate Road
Click to see the original lyrics (Finnish)
Via Raate road, to Finland, came an uninvited mob,
without visas wearing weird woolen hats
Their efforts stopped in freezing cold and unbroken snow,
mittens and skis had been forgotten home.
A big welcoming party had been planned to be held in Oulu
but first we need get rid of those Finnish Chukhnas¹
Then we are able to celebrate the conquered land,
the Red orchestra is going to play: "Dobrii stolisnaadaa…"²
Chorus:
Raate’s, Raate’s border and the barrier,
there was a text: “Here starts Finland”.
Untreated snowy road and forest all around it
this land we’re going to conquer, no one lives here
Even the sun set down to West, the northern wind was bothering
Cabbage soup got frozen to mess kit, the sky was clear.
Someone shouted: “What if we would get back home now,
we are dead frozen and have also trudged to a motti ³.”
Finally came peacefulness and quietness to the Raate road
The barrier is down again, the guns aren’t rumbling
The wilderness is crying for the memories, it was many years ago
Finland is a free land again, we didn’t fight for nothing.
Chorus 2x
Raate’s, Raate’s border and the barrier,
now there’s written: “EU and Finland”.
Untreated snowy road and forest all around it
In Finland stayed the whole mob, no one returned home.

¹ Chukhna is an ethnic slur for Finns.
² Dobrii stolisnaadaa = Dobrii Stolishnaja
Stolishnaja is Russian vodka and thus the phrase means “good vodka”.
³ Motti is Finnish military slang for a totally encircled enemy unit.
