To persist

*"sole common denominator" is the word for word translation. The meaning in German would be something like "the last/only thing in common between two things/people"
** "keep the face" is also the word for word translation. I can just more ore less describe the idea behind it: It often means that you are just showing a limited part of yourself (of your feelings, in this case) in order to preserve your own dignity or pride.
