AUGUST
Nikos Papazoglou - Thessaloniki - Greece
Why should the song be so sad
It suddenly broke away from my heart
And at this very moment, when I feel so joyous
It's climbed up to my lips and drowned me
"Beware till the end", you'll tell me...
I love you, but have no voice to tell you so...
And this pain is unbearable
Sadness is cracking me, because I, too, feel
The road we've taken is impossible
Have faith, you'll get by, you'll tell me...
How can I forget her loose hair,
The sand, washing down like a cascade
As she was leaning over me with thousands of kisses,
Diamonds which she generously offered me
I'll go, even if it turns out wrong
In what ecstasy swirl,
What mysterious dance
Can a creature like her have been born?
From which distant star does this light,
Which came to hide inside her eyes, originate?
And me, so lucky to have seen it...
Inside her gaze, a small, tiny sky
Sparkles, shadows, reflects
But as night falls, it floods with light
A rising August moon
And prison glows from within...
How can I forget her loose hair,
The sand, washing down like a cascade
As she was leaning over me with thousands of kisses,
Diamonds which she generously offered me
I'll go, even if it turns out wrong

Nikos Kazantzakis, a famous Greek author (1883-1957), narrated that when he visited Florence, he was so happy, that he felt this was arrogant. In order to moderate his happiness, he inserted gravel in his shoes. The gravel tortured him enough, to save him, he felt, from the consequences of unlimited, hubristic, happiness.
The song AVGOUSTOS (AUGUST), by the late Nikos Papazoglou (died 17-4-2011, age 63), portraits this same feeling. The dark evil behind the happy light, for which we have to be prepared. Our defence against sudden pain, which always has to be kept in mind when we are happy. The thorns, the gravel in our shoes, as a reminder...
