The Television

I turned on the TV, as usual, the same talk,
Art is dull, just like the media.
One acts like an artist, another plays the intellectual,
And the audience, as always, makes noise and claps.
They teach you how to love and hate,
Plant any idea into your mind.
The washing machine runs day and night,
Washing brains and polluting thoughts.
I turned on the TV, as usual, the same talk,
Art is dull, just like the media.
One acts like an artist, another plays the intellectual,
And the audience, as always, makes noise and claps.
The television is in control,
Takes you far, brings you back, and keeps your mind absent.
The television is in control,
Takes you far, brings you back, and keeps your mind absent.
And the talk show host,
Joking like a clown,
With the actress full of "emotion,"
Who "loves everyone."
Same old story, nothing new,
An old lady playing the young girl’s role.
Same script, same dialogue,
Forced upon us without choice.
And the songs, none impress me,
No meaning, no depth.
Same template, like movies and series,
Just Bodies, curves, and dances .. and festival beats.
The television is in control,
Takes you far, brings you back, and keeps your mind absent.
The television is in control,
Takes you far, brings you back, and keeps your mind absent.
A "strategic analyst" straight out of an action movie,
Day and night, ranting at us.
Living in a fantasy, seeing conspiracies everywhere,
Claiming "January 25 wasn’t a revolution."
And of course, the host is just a parrot,
His job is to polish and frame the picture.
They profit from whatever’s trending,
Sometimes with religion, sometimes with freedom.
The television is in control,
Takes you far, brings you back, and keeps your mind absent.
The television is in control,
Takes you far, brings you back, and keeps your mind absent.
People keep hating on each other,
While ignorance shines on the screen.
They shut down the show 1 before it even starts,
Because the truth hurts, and burns.
The joke was funny yesterday,
But today, the mood won’t allow it.
And if your words make sense or have meaning,
They’ll call you a traitor, not one of us.
- 1. Elbernameg was a satirical TV show by Bassem Youssef, initially praised for mocking Mohamed Morsi’s government. However, after the 2013 coup, the same audience that once supported it turned against it when Youssef criticized the new regime. The show was eventually shut down under government pressure.
