Original lyrics

Translation

Father you were strong

Father, you were strong,
Bearing the scorching heat that would burn your helmet,
Sleeping among the enemy's corpses.
Sipping mud, biting on grass,
Enduring the rough mountains and rivers for thousands of miles,
Yet you struck for us.

Husband, you were strong,
Facing the bone-chilling cold that would freeze even to the bones,
Standing in creeks beyond your reach,
Immersed for three days,
Without food for ten days,
Yet you triumphed for us.

Older brother, younger brother, thank you,
Bullets, mines, and muddy currents,
Naval ensign advancing at day and night,
Known as the soaring of the wild eagles,
Not even a shadow of the remaining enemy planes,
Yet you accomplished for us.

Comrade, my child, thank you,
Tales of honorable wounds,
No matter how many times I hear them, tears fill my eyes,
The children who fell that day in the battle,
Today, they blossom as cherry flowers in Kudan1,
Still, you bloom for us.

Oh your bodies glorious deeds.
The sincere hearts of a hundred million people,
bound together into one by the Japanese spirit.
Now on the blue skies of the continent.
When we see the Hinomaru flying high,
crying, we will honour your helmets of steel.
