Tá Na Báid
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige1
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige
Iasc ar snámh is líonta tarraingthe
Tonnta ard’ is gaoth is anaithe
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir
Tá Séamus Cháit is crúba gleamaigh air
A’ taoscadh an bháid ’s é liúinn go taitneamhach
Aoibh mo shláinte i gCúirt na gCarabhat
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir.
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir
Ar theacht an Márta, slán ma mhairimid
Gheobhaimid táinte breátha dearga
Éisc ó Phádraig Naofa Beannaithe
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir.
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir
Tá na báid go doimhin sa bhfarraige
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir
Guímse ’n t-ádh ’na chruacha daingne
Anuas ar chách a théann chun farraige
Líonta lán go bruach is rath orthu
Slán abhaile go dtaga na fir
Aoibh mo shláinte i gCúirt na gCarabhat
Slán abahile go dtaga na fir
Aoibh mo shláinte i gCúirt na Seanabhast
Slán abahile go dtaga na fir
- 1. grammatically this should actually be “san fharraige,” since “farraige” is a feminine noun

The Boats Are Out On the Deep Sea
The boats are out on the deep sea
The boats are out on the deep sea
The boats are out on the deep sea
May the men return home safely
The boats are out on the deep sea
May the men return home safely
The boats are out on the deep sea
May the men return home safely
The boats are out on the deep sea
The fish are swimming and the nets are being hauled
High waves and wind and tempests
May the men come home safely
The boats are out on the deep sea
May the men return home safely
The boats are out on the deep sea
May the men return home safely
Séamus, Kate’s son has a lobster claw on him
Bailing out the boat, and shouting cheerfully
We’ll drink a health in the Court of the Cravats1
May the men return home safely
The boats are out on the deep sea
May the men return home safely
The boats are out on the deep sea
May the men return home safely
When March comes, if we survive safely
We’ll get fine massive hauls
Fish from Blessed Saint Patrick
May the men return home safely
The boats are out on the deep sea
May the men return home safely
The boats are out on the deep sea
May the men return home safely
I pray for luck with sturdy loads
Upon all who go to sea
Nets full to the brim with prosperity
May the men return home safely.
Drink a health In the Court of the Cravats1
May the men return home safely
Drink a health in the Court of the Old Vests2
May the men return home safely
- 1. a. b. The Carabhait or Cravats (Neckties) were a faction in the agrarian uprisings that took place in Munster during the early nineteenth century. They represented landless labourers who fought the wealthy farmers, known as Shanavests (see Footnote #2).
- 2. The Seanabhasts (also spelled Seanavests (literally “old vests”) were another faction in the early nineteenth century land disputes in the town of Cashel and surrounding districts. They supported the wealthy farmers in opposition to the Caravats and Whiteboys. But in this song, both sides are united in wishing the fisherman good health and a safe return.
