* I chose the title “Numbness”, because although “Lithium” in the original means lithium – a chemical element and a drug used in medicine, for me, in this "Evanescence" song it symbolizes something more than just a substance. It is an image of emotional numbness, a state in which a person suppresses their feelings in order not to feel pain. If I had kept “Lithium,” I would have preserved the literal meaning and the medical reference, but I would have lost the metaphorical dimension that Amy Lee emphasizes so strongly in the lyrics.
That is why I decided on “Numbness.” This choice is not a mistake, but a conscious decision of a translator who balances between literalness and interpretation. “Lithium” would be a faithful translation, maintaining the reference to the element and the drug, whereas “Numbness” conveys the emotional meaning the state in which sadness and emptiness become part of one’s identity. That is precisely why I felt this title better reflects the atmosphere of the song for a Polish audience.
* Wybrałem tytuł „Otępienie”, bo choć „Lithium” w oryginale oznacza lit, pierwiastek chemiczny i lek stosowany w medycynie Dla mnie w tej piosence "Evanescence" symbolizuje coś więcej niż tylko substancję. To obraz emocjonalnego odrętwienia, stanu, w którym człowiek tłumi swoje uczucia, żeby nie czuć bólu. Gdybym zostawił „Lit”, zachowałbym dosłowność i odniesienie do medycznego kontekstu, ale straciłbym ten metaforyczny wymiar, który Amy Lee tak mocno podkreśla w tekście.
Dlatego zdecydowałem się na „Otępienie”. Ten wybór nie jest błędem, lecz świadomą decyzją tłumacza, który balansuje między dosłownością a interpretacją. „Lit” byłby wiernym tłumaczeniem, zachowującym odniesienie do pierwiastka i leku, natomiast „Otępienie” oddaje emocjonalny sens-stan, w którym smutek i pustka stają się częścią tożsamości. Właśnie dlatego uznałem, że ten tytuł lepiej oddaje klimat utworu dla polskiego odbiorcy.
