Like in an ancient song

Autumn comes — like in that ancient song,
Winter comes — and the brother longs to wed.
He longs, he longs to take a bride,
Yet does not know she has already been taken this morning.
And see — the wind bears crimson maple leaves,
Carrying them through Riga, kissing them away...
Leaves kissed away in the morning, this dear autumn.
What now shall be taken this dear autumn — this dear autumn?
It will be the bitter fire kindled this autumn,
And the silver we poured, telling fortunes in the wind, every autumn, as ever.
So it must be foretold — like in that ancient song —
The future that comes, still unknown.
That ruddy Riga fire must be lit this autumn,
The one that makes you read the signs again.
For the wind bears crimson maple leaves,
Carrying them through Riga, kissing them away...
Leaves kissed away in the morning, this dear autumn.
What now shall be taken this dear autumn — this dear autumn?
It will be the bitter fire that was kindled this autumn,
And the silver we poured, telling fortunes in the wind, every autumn, as ever.
