Pig

Our Christmas festivities begin in May
The piggies feast on treats,1, they fatten up
they grow, they get stronger.
And then when November rolls around
the children sing: we need a Christmas star2

Pig: it gets a bullet in the head
Pig: its uncle butchers it
Pig: and uncle drinks the blood
Pig: it brings the Christmas spirit

I looked at the boar sprawled in the pigpen
With a look of suffering, my stomach churning
At Christmas, I don't remember the pig
My eyes only crave ham
And the children sing: we need a Christmas star2

Pig: when it's cured in salt
Pig: we all drool together
Pig: and Daddy is happy
Pig: his mouth watering

Someone rushes blindly in the Christmas crush
through the streets, ploughing through the Advent slush
If you see this person, you turn your head3
When this person is wallowing in their pigsty
And the children sing: we need a Christmas star2

Pig: it's soon roasted
Pig: we taste the rear end
Pig: it's in an electric oven
Pig: Mum's at work

Watch Mother putting all the food out4
The pig is glazed with mustard
Big brother sharpens his knife
And separates piggy from its bones
The children sing: we need a Christmas star2

Pig: has finally been killed
Pig: surrounded by stomach acid
Pig: oh, how Daddy can eat!
Pig: Daddy's belt is running out

Christmas is full of ham, belly, hock
Fat, neck meat, and of course, vodka
When the evening ends and night begins
A man is what he eats5

Pig: lalllaallaaa-aa
Pig: trallallaa-aa
Pig: trallallaa-aa
Pig: trallaallaaalla-aa

  • 1. lit. "treats in (their) mouths"
  • 2. a. b. c. d. lit. "the Christmas star is essential"
  • 3. lit. "Someone sees this person, turns their head"
  • 4. "laittaa kystä kyllä", Finnish idiom, literally "put out enough baked food". This is a reference to an old Finnish Christmas song, "Kun joulu on".
  • 5. lit. "a person is what they eat", similar to the English expression "You are what you eat". I don't know why but I just feel gender-specific "man" works better here.
