Vallomás

Habos párnákon vívódik egy asszony.
Szemére halkan, reszketőn suhan
A végső árnyék. Lenn, az ágy fejénél
Virraszt a férfi sápadt komoran.
 
Már alighogy zihál,
A szívverése halkabb lesz, eláll.
A végső percben megmozdul az ajka,
Vonagló szókban, töredezve, rajta
Egy élet kínja, vádja ott remeg:
"Hazugság volt! Soh'sem szerettelek!
Valaki egyszer szívem összetörte,
Elhagyva, árván jártam a világon.
Te akkor boldogságot kértél tőlem,
Én hittem, hogy a békét megtalálom..."
De ezt a hangot fül nem hallja már,
Hullámot nem ver, visszhangja se kél,
A szók értelme elhal születetlen...
S hűlő kezére ráborul a férj.

Translation

Confession

On frothy sheets, a woman's agony.
Life's parting shadow stealthily, aquiver,
Descends upon her eyes. Meanwhile, her man
Pale white, sits by her bedside and keeps vigil.
 
Her breathing, merely wheezes,
Her heart beats ever slowly, then, it ceases.
Her lips move in her final moment,
Spill broken words, a lifetime's torment,
In fits and starts, a trembling accusation:
"T'was all a lie! Our love, an aberration!
Once, long ago, my tender heart was broken,
I wandered, aimless, an abandoned orphan.
You came, then, seeking happiness from me,
And I believed, at last, I'd find some peace..."
This sound, alas, forever goes unheard,
It leaves no wake, disturbs no candle's flame,
Stillborn, the words disperse into the void...
And he falls on her cold and lifeless frame.
